2018 Expedition Platinum
Today I added the ambient lighting ring and harness to the cup holders. Not too difficult, have to remove the trim around the radio to get the center console trim off then disassemble the cup holders to add the light ring. We have a 2018 Expedition Platinum that we are going to trade in soon (have a 2022 on order) so I took the light ring from that and ordered a wiring harness off a guy on another forum that makes them. If anyone doesn't know what I'm referring to, I can post a link. Just not sure if linking to other forums is OK.

His harness is supposed to be color changing and I updated forscan to add the ambient lighting option in the menu but couldn't get it to actually change the color so put it back to single color for now.

Ordered the Tremor inserts off Etsy.

Very cool! Post that link for the harness if you get time

Here's a write up and the guy who makes the harness. They started doing it on F250's so that thread is about that.
Info on buying his harness is on this thread as well. He makes 2 harnesses, one has the LED's and connects to the light ring and the other connects to the harness under the glove box.

Page 4 of this tread talks about doing it on the F150.

Cool! Finally got my truck Friday. I have all the parts too! You beat me to getting this done looks nice!

Got any pictures on how you took the console apart to get to the cupholders?

It’s easy, watch the YouTube video which shows the trim removal around the radio. The link above shows the other steps as well.

Looks great man. Makes a big difference. I messaged the guy to order one of his harnesses.

I'm wondering how hard getting a light in the glovebox is, I feel like that one is really important.

Thanks for the info... This will be something I add to my to do list when the truck arrives in 5 or 6 weeks.

Really is too bad they removed this for the 2022 model. Makes no sense to me!

Ok, so I tried to add the ambient light ring to my 2022 Tremor today. The cup holders plastic clips have been moved up and the ambient light ring is to much when sandwiched back together to make them fit. Not sure what to do now. Might have to see if I can order a 2021 cupholder?

Super disappointed currently.

I had that issue too and had to get creative as I wasn’t going to concede. Lol

I used a cable tie on each end to cinch it back together. Ended up drilling a small hole in the edge of the plastic on each side so I could loop the cable tie through. Worked great and not visible once the cupholder is back in the console.

The plastic grips in the cup holder also were a little off so I ended up snapping the tabs at the top and then adding some electrical tape to extend them down and hold them in place while putting it all back together.

In hindsight, I should have just grabbed the whole cup holder from my expedition and swapped the whole assembly with the light ring but I had already disassembled everything so just made it work.

Well you inspired me to not give up! With a little modification I got it to work too. Instead of electrical tape I drilled two holes (3/32 bit) for zip ties to secure the cup holders. I also drilled holes and zip tied the cup holder bottom. It’s in and working!

Great info. on the ambient lighting additions guys. I had a 2010 F150 Harley Davidson Edition which had awesome ambient lighting.. cup holders, doors and under the dash and seats. It even had multiple color options. Not sure why Ford eliminated this option but I definitely want to upgrade to what you guys are doing when my Tremor arrives in 3 months ish..

@Dmallen2010 - Thanks for the detailed writeup, much appreciated! I just finished installing in my 2022 and followed your pattern, worked perfect. Overall, this mod was a bit more than I'd like to have taken on but definitely glad I stuck with it.

Also, John who makes the harnesses, suggested another good idea, which is to take a belt sander and grind the plastic down a bit to make room for the light ring. I believe he has the precise measurements on the 14th gen forum for those considering this mod. That said, I feel like the zip ties are going to be durable and hold up for the long term as well.

Guys instead of zip tying the cup holders and stuff, remove 5mm from the cup holders(NOT THE BOTTOMS) the light ring will fit perfectly and you dont have to cut anything up.

Saw this on your post that you updated. Will be doing it that way once my light ring comes in, one day.

check out the other thread on here, I made the light ring 3D printable, hopefully that guy can print some for people.
Can you link it? I saw you made the design but that the printer can only do half of it. Didn't see someone else was able to actually print it.

the lights i sell are the -E part number, they are color change, but Ford has done something to the software on the 22 F150 so color change doesnt work. I have verified this with a member here, and also with a local guy that has a 22. not sure what the deal is hopefully they fix it in a future software update. the color change still works in my 22 super duty with sync 4. I bought a bunch of the -E lights to try to help everyone out because they were back ordered. F150 guys can also buy the complete cup holder with lights and all but theres a 50/50 chance you get a complete assembly. buying the complete cup holder is much cheaper but no guarantee you get all the stuff needed.
