I know this is a bit of a hot topic but will you be installing a catch can or no? I have done all the research and still haven't made up my mind.

I am not sure yet either — never had one before. Is it worth it?

Bought mine new back in 2013 and never used one. I believe simple is better. Less lines to worry about

Yeah, i think you need to remember to periodically clean it out too.

Yeah needs to be checked at each oil change. Some people swear by them and then you have some never used with 150k no issues. All the research I've done explain they are great but on the fence still.

I feel the best thing you can do is keep up with your oil changes. Even in other motors I have Generators ,boat, or motorcycle if they don't get much use I still change the oil every year. If a catch can makes you sleep better at night than of course get one.

No, I won't be. I had one on my Raptor when I bought it and took it off and sold it. Our engines don't really need it unless you are really pushing it hard all of the time, like racing or maybe with a heavy tune. It got to be a pain to maintain them for what it was getting me.

Tons of arguing about this in the Gen2 Raptor forums if you want to do some searching for more info.

Will do, thanks for info and yeah I had one on my old charger in 2008 and remember it was a pain checking it all the time.

I had one on my 2014 f150 platinum and let me tell you it made a world of difference. The amount of oil that comes out of the catch can die to blow by is crazy. All turbo engines have blow by. A catch can is just basically filtering oil. My 2014 was a breeze to maintenance. Open the hood and right there. If I see one that fits my build I'm gonna grab one.

I consider myself reasonably intelligent but I just can't convince myself that I know more than engineers who have been working this same engine for nearly 20 years.

It seems that if it were important, they would add the catch can with a one-way valve to empty back into the system when the engine was off. Basically covering all bases. Or, build the engine with tighter rings.

I mean engineering is one thing, but sometimes they don't think of practical uses. Research 2014 f150 charge air cooler on YouTube and check out what was happening. Turbo engines make a ton of blow by and Ford hasn't come out with a breather filter to catch it. Idk I guess dmallen2010 said just kinna a cheap insurance.

This might be a dumb question. But do the passenger side catch cans vent the whole engine and the side just refers to the mounting position? Or do you need 2 catch cans to actually vent the whole engine?

Not sure why it's needed since our engine has port injection, which cleans up that gunk from my understanding. But it doesn't hurt the engine, just one additional maintenance item that may serve as a placebo more than anything else. For engines without port injections, like the one in the new Maverick, I would add it in a heartbeat.

Oh yeah. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong. I'm saying it's above my paygrade and would think 20 years would sus out any engineering shortfalls.

If you are planning on keeping this thing for awhile, but the ESP from Flood or Ziegler Ford and forget about catch cans, cam phasers, etc…. You’ll likely need the extended warranty for something else anyway. Just my $.02.

BTW - If you aren’t familiar with Flood or Ziegler, best prices anywhere. Most dealers can’t match them.

@RotorHead695 I just finished my approximate build cost breakdown and the two things you've recommended (and I'm buying) are more than the rest of my build (sliders, tires, wheels, winch mount, intercooler relocation, bedrug) with the exception of suspension.

Thanks for the recommendation on ESP

You’re welcome! Lol

I have had 3 F150’s the Tremor I am waiting on will be my fourth. All have had the 3.5 ecoboost. Not one of my trucks has had a catch can and I have had no issues. My trucks have been 2014, 2016, 2018 and soon to be a 2021. I will not be running a catch can on this one either.

Sounds like you trade every 2-3 years. So it probably wouldn’t benefit you. I’m talking about keeping the truck for 10 years +, so I see there could be more benefit in the long run.
