On older Ecoboost engines people would regularly advocate for using catch cans. Is this still the case with the newer style engines? If so, what would be some good brands to look for?

I think there is another thread about this. Seems like there are a bunch for it and a bunch against it and then some in the middle. I know some say there is not a need due to the newer 3.5 engines having that port injection with the direct injection. I don't think you can go wrong with either way. I did add the JLT. I recently emptied it at about 5000 miles. I attached photos here. I feel better just catching all the blow by instead of it getting put back into the engine even though the engine is designed that way. Yes I know the Ford Engineers are smart and they do know better than me about this stuff and engine design but just piece of mind for me lol.

I tried searching for it but couldn't find another thread. That's a decent amount of oil after just 5k though. Where did you mount yours in the engine bay?

I have a stock 2013. I never put one on. I keep up with my oil changes. If it make you sleep better at night by all means put one on.

I want to say with port and direct injection in the 2018+ ecoboosts, it isn't as big of a deal. Like @James Dean said though, if it helps you sleep at night....

I mounted it at the recommended spot per JLT. They provide clear colored instructions and the bracket / parts. I've attached the pics. When I first installed it does look kind of high and I was worried that the hood may hit it but after closer inspection, it does clear with a decent amount of room. It just doesn't look like it at first.

Catch Cans come up on the other F150 forums almost as much as the "how often should I change my oil" or "what oil is best" threads - at least weekly.

The current ecoboost engine hasnt changed in design to change the talk of whether or not a catch can is needed, but I am of the opinion that if it makes you feel better than go for it, but its not needed, just like it is not needed to change your oil before 10k or your OLM tells you to. My experience to back this up is working with a fleet of over 100 F150s with the ecoboost (and many more than that when you factor out the ones we have replaced over the years) and we also have an oil lab at my work and sample whenever we service the trucks. Have never had an issue where I could say we should have had a catch can or changed the oil at 5k rather than 10k.

If you do install a catch can just make sure that you empty it regularly.

Just jumping in to say I really appreciate the mature conversation going on in this thread!

It's not uncommon to see threads where folks have strong opinions on topics such as catch cans, oil filters, air filters, gas octane.... to turn into a real cluster of bashing one another. You're making the world at better place to live. Well, at least a better reading thread. ;)

Agreed. I'm going to go without a catch can. Saves me some money and work for what seems like not enough gain.

These are 100% my thoughts on the subject as well. I also got the ESC which this mod ‘could’ cause an issue with approving a warranty claim on an engine related issue arose
