I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on my Granger order. Being in Colorado I have a few questions for those who have bought from Granger and live out of state.
  1. When we pick up , there is no tax paid, just the couple of fees that are mentioned in the email and sale price, right?
  2. When we register the vehicle in CO, that is when we pay the taxes right? (so for me being in Arapahoe county I'd be paying 7.25% of the sale price Plus registration fees).
  3. Do we also need to obtain a VIN verification at the same time?
  4. Do I need to obtain a Colorado temp tag once I get it back home?
  5. Does it make sense to drive my current truck out there (worth around 25k) and save roughly $1800 in taxes by trading it in or just sell locally and fly out there?
  6. Anything else I'm missing? just curious what to expect, Thanks!!

To get the straight scoop, I'd contact your state or county assessor's office and Granger. Granger may be the number one Ford dealer in online sales and they do this all day, every day. Granger will give you the bill-of-sale and put a paper tag in the rear window. I didn't need to get an Arkansas temp tag because I was able to get a regular plate in time.

You'll pay your taxes in Colorado, not with Granger.

Granger takes tons of trade-ins. Contact them to determine their trade value on your truck. Typically, you'll get more selling it yourself than trading it in, but a trade is easier and you don't have to deal with all the fake buyers.

Again, contact your assessor's office and Granger to be sure.

Fellow CO owner and Granger buyer. Picked up 10/6/22.

1- Correct, you pay a transit tag fee which is something like $15-30.
2- Yes, when you take it to the DMV be prepared to write a check for ~$5800 for tax, title, license.
3- Yes, get the VIN verification at a local police station for free. Walk inside and tell them you need a VIN verification, you just bought an out of state vehicle and need to register it. Granger will FedEx you the title, this takes about 10-15 days. Once the title is in hand, your VIN verification and registration process can begin.
4- You have 15-30 days or so with the temp tag that Granger will sticker on your back window
5- This is a personal decision. If you think you'll get good trade in value, you're willing to drive out and back 10-11 hours each way, then maybe it's worth it. I'd hate to get there and find out Granger doesn't value your trade in line with your expectations.
6- Nothing else to expect; get your paperwork done ahead of time. Hopefully you're locked in on financing already, the cost to borrow continues to escalate.

Awesome, exactly what I needed to know, and pretty much what I expected. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

I'm not locked in for financing, if you have any recommendations that would be great, but I'll see what the CU I used from my last truck says.

I financed through Logix Federal Credit Union in CA for 2.99% and 48M back on 8/28. That same rate today is 4.49% (https://www.logixbanking.com/rates/vehicle-loans). Logix would not finance for an out of state buy, so I had to take dealer financing (Capital One, 4.3% for 60M) and then move it over to Logix once it was registered in CO.

We just completed the process of securing financing for my fiancee for 3.74% for 60M through School's First CU (a CA credit union). This was the best rate we could find. It's still available but you need to be a CA school employee, or relative, to become a member. https://www.schoolsfirstfcu.org/gateway/schoolsfirstfcu/rates/auto-loans

I searched on https://www.creditunionsonline.com/top25coloradocreditunions.html for you, and the credit unions that looked to have the lowest rates based on what they list on their websites (and assuming you qualify to be a member) are below. Recommend you call around and do a more thorough search than I performed. Rates are spiking upwards dramatically so if you are sure that you are within 60d of your buy, you may want to lock your rate in.

Other- https://policefcu.com/ - This is the best I've seen at 2.99% (thought the date says as of 11/1).

Wow, thanks for the info, sounds like i have some research to do!

Just to add a few things for a more complete picture:

It can take up to 30 days to get the title from the Iowa DOT, as mine did back in June. Granger Next-days it as soon as they get it.

The transit tag with purchase is 15 days, and a 30 day one comes with the title.

In California I could get a 60 day operating permit after CA got their pound of flesh taxes and fees. Otherwise I would have been without a moving permit between the first permit and the one from the title.
