Does CarPlay eat your phone battery?

It kills my phone battery is very short order, even if I'm not streaming music, but just connected to the truck via carplay.
Also makes my phone heat up pretty good.......

I have Apple I-Phone 12 Pro.

Anybody else have this issue?

Android auto rapes my phone battery also.

Quicker than not using car play, but it’s also transferring a lot of info to the truck and using GPS. I don’t think it’s an un realistic rate for what the phone is doing. Does generate a bit of heat as well but again, nothing I’d consider excessive. I just plug mine in as soon as I get in the truck.

The phone is driving the display, but that seems like it shouldn't be any more taxing than driving the phone screen, especially on these phones that have resolution 2-3x the car screen. And it's not actually powering the screen.

On Android Auto, it does let the car GPS take over, verified by the Ford developer from infotainment.com.

True, it’s obviously not powering the screen. But it is maintaining a WiFi connection to SYNC and transferring data, navigation,music, ect ect. I don’t watch a lot of videos on my phone, but if my kids are any indication WiFi and cell data can drain a battery, though with the kids it is powering their screen so . I honestly don’t know which GPS it uses, it would make sense to use the trucks GPS but again .

That was more of a quizzical statement about why the phone tend to use so much battery in this mode.

I regularly stream music over WiFi which is then broadcast to a Bluetooth speaker when chorin' outside, and the phone doesn't even warm up.

When connected to AA wireless, the phone will get hot and burn battery even if I'm not showing any AA screen, and just playing music stored on the phone itself (no mobile data).

I figured it was just my 3-year old phone not being up to the task, but this also seems to be a Ford issue. I was using AA wired on a Pioneer head unit for a while, then was using an AA Wireless dongle with it, and didn't get this level of power drain.

I trust Jesse's assertion about the GPS being the truck's given it's his job to understand the system completely, but I do want to stuff the phone in a faraday box (with a wired connection) to see for myself.

I know with my old phone (3 year old Samsung galaxy s10+) android auto killed the battery faster than my wireless charger could charge it. I had to plug it in for long drives. My new phone this isn't a problem.

Correct. Samsung Galaxy s22 ultra. Haven't done any longer trips with the new phone, but even on the way to work using Android auto the percentage will go up by a few percent. Clearly my issue was the old phone's battery was barely holding on, but at 3 years old that doesn't really surprise me.

That should help, especially since you should be getting quick charging while having it plugged in. When I had my old phone, plugging it in charged it great even still running Bluetooth.
