So with the new truck also came the phone call to my insurance company. Anyway, it turned out to be a good time to review my policies — home insurance rates are going up, more on that later — to determine I was getting the correct level of coverage and not over paying. I am 48 years old and a decent driver, I don’t have any accidents or speeding tickets on my record — knock on wood. I had been previously insuring a 2019 F150 Limited and thus didn’t really expect any changes on the rate, and indeed the rate only raised $10 for the 6 month period.

However, a recent mailer from the local Allstate representative caught my attention and I gave them a call. The agent was able to win my business not with a savings on the truck but instead my home. Turns out the price of lumber and building materials has driven up prices on home insurance polices. Specifically mine had gone up about ~25%, which was around $300 dollars annually. The agent was able to keep my same coverage and bring the cost to what I pay currently pay, thereby avoiding an increase. I did call my former agent and offer them a chance to adjust, but in the end they weren’t able to beat it — so I switched!

Along with joining Allstate came an introduction to DriveWise — basically you install the AllState App on your phone and it will monitor your driving and give you discounts for excellent driving. This gave me pause….

I really don’t want my driving data being recorded and going to my insurance company, even being a good driver. My new Allstate agent says its for “only 50 trips” and then I can turn it off — I’d like to add the 50 trips is required for each 6 month period. Still, this just seems a bit over the top. I asked about the repercussions of not joining the program, and was told that it may rate would raise $57.72 at renewal. She kept also telling me that I could earn discounts too — yeah, still… Apparently on top of the immediate discount of $57.72 for being a semi-forced participant, you can earn up to an additional 15% off the 6 month premium for being a good safe driver.

I asked her about when I was off-roading — lots of jarring movement and sudden stops and acceleration — and was told to turn the phone off. LOL

You can read more about all the data that is collected here:

I think I may just pay the extra $10 a month and not participate. I don’t want to think about my driving score everytime I go somewhere.

Do any of you have any experience with these types of monitoring devices, and how do you feel about it?

Lumber just dropped to lower than it was last year, so that is some BS. I turn off the My Journeys tracking in the FordPAss app, I don't want anyone knowing that info, so probably wouldn't be comfortable with it for insurance reasons either. That said, I'd be totally cool with a pay per mile tax system if they remove gas taxes and didn't track exact locations.

Have no experience but Ford just launched this and its interesting and works on similar principals. https://www.ford.com/ford-insure/

I couldn’t handle the thought of my phone monitoring me — day one, I canceled and went with Liberty Mutual instead. Saved a little over $30 a month on auto with a better policy and over $400 on the home with same coverage. No monitoring device.

Woot!
