UPDATE: Order guide from 3/14 corrected this. No 4A for you 401A guys unfortunately.

Excerpt from latest ordering guide seems to indicate that the Hi-Lock Transfer case is now included on the 401A. This would be upsetting for many I expect since that is a main motivator to have ordered the 402A.

Bit of a correction. The Hi-Lock is a separate line item from the Two-Speed Auto AWD.

400A - No AWD
401A - AWD
402A - AWD + Hi-Lock

The Mechanical Locking 4WD is the Hi-Lock Tcase from the Raptor. The AWD in other trucks, Platinum/Limited, is a clutch-based system, not mechanical.

So this seems to indicate the 401A now gets that same Raptor/402A system.

I hope this is true, but my truck was built last week and will probably miss out.
I'm sure it's a typo, I expect only way to get the 4A is with the 402A package.

I had the same understanding that they are one and the same (AWD w/mech. lock 4wd, and Hi-Lock), which is what makes this confusing.

My guess is its a typo and they are using the clutch-based system in the 401A and reserving the mechanical Hi-Lock for the the 402A, but hope I'm wrong and they are pushing down the Hi-Lock to offer a better value.

I doubt the 401A even gets the clutch based system, I bet it just stays 4WD, no AWD.

Is this the same as the front Torsen locking diff, or something else?

No we are talking about transfer cases.

Torsen is a limited slip front differential that is available as a standalone option on all Tremor trim levels.

This is the best explanation I've found to explain the difference in the transfer case guys.

The 401a has the same transfer case as the lariat I've heard. If true it's perfectly capable of doing 4A. They just didn't enable it for the 401a. Seems like ford considered it a luxury feature and really wanted you into that lariat level trim before you got it.

hopefully that’s not true. If so, it then has the disadvantages of the clutch AND no 4A

On my 401a I'm certain its a clutch based transfer case without 4a. On top of that it's probably capable of 4A and just not enabled lol. I have not tried to see if its the same transfer case as the lariat, but thats what I've heard. If so It's possible Ford decided to enable it. Maybe its a job 2 change.

Is this part of 2022 Tremor build? Perhaps they are using the same 402a part for 401’s to save on complexity. This would be so awesome if true!

I’m hoping it’s the same transfer case without the Hi Lock with mechanical lock

My paperwork dated 11/3/2021 states only the 402a package has a Hi-Lock transfer case in that line item. Does not state if it’s mechanical. I believe it is.

I'll be happy if my 401A has the Lariat case with 4A, that is one big feature that I wanted and almost pushed me to a 402A....I doubt it will have hi-lock which would be even better but I would definitely be happy just having the 4A option
