Onboard air compressor

I have this one and it lives under the rear-passenger seat in it's little carrying bag. Would love to find better place to mount or store it!

I hang my air horn compressor viaire 450 and 3 gallon air tank from the frame rails. I use steel stock above and below the frame rails and threaded rods on transmission side and outside of frame to squeeze the steel. No drilling or bolting ot the frame. Make the top pieces 6" longer than the lowers to hang the compressor (tucked in a harbor freight plastic tool box for protection) (tops about 12" logn, bottoms 6" long) Have done this on all my vehicles as they all need air horns. Take 5 minutes to remove when selling the old vehicles. Cost is $10

Had a set of Nathan P3 trainhorns on my 7.3 PSD F250 and a total of 9 gallons of air at 145psi. Scared teh poop out of folks so I removed them and stuck with the 29" semi horns.

Would be great to get a few pics of your setup!

I've had OBA on other vehicles. Honestly, unless you are using it every weekend, or you have airbags for towing, a portable compressor is a better use of your money. This Dewalt one has impressed the heck out of me. Runs of battery, 12V or 120V. Best part is you just set it to the pressure you want and let it go, it shuts off at whatever pressure you set.

I have a Viair in a storage bag that fits under the back seat. In my Jeep, which airs down a lot, I have an ARB twin pump under the passenger seat.

Has anyone installed an air compressor in their truck? Where did you put it?

First you need to decide what compressor you want. If you get a ARB twin air there is mounts galore for it. Due to its small size it can be mounted under the hood, under a seat on the Built Right panels. If you go to a cheap option they size grows dramatically, limiting where you can put it.

This compressor is super popular for a china special. It out performs the ARB by a significant amount. But it's large and disposable. Tons of videos on mods to make it a killer compressor for less than half the price of an ARB. But with ARB you get parts availability, tons of accessories, mounts, compact size, lower amp draw and proven reliability.

I have posted this before, but I am a huge Power Tanks fan, I do own ARB's. But like Bannerman said, if you don't use it often why bother. I even have air bags and tow often. But I always check my trailer tires before I go and take the 10 seconds to fill the air bags at the same time. I love the new cordless options out there.

This is larger than most people would want but when you have it already it works fantastic, strap it to the built right panels and just use the pro power, the good thing is it will power air tools as well, so if anybody needs an impact, rachet, grinder, etc it will work as well.

Will post some when I get it installed on the Tremor. Still scratching my head where to moutn the 29" horn. On teh FX4 ther was acres of room between radiator and grille but I have only had the Tremor for about a week and a half and Cali is currnetly in monsoon season...

One more note on onboard air. I would never do it again without an auxiliary tank. Makes the system so much more usable. Cuts inflation time down, lets you use it blow yourself or your floors off. You don’t have to have the compressor on to fill your airbags. And if you have train horns you can use it for both.

I have a tank right now, but I'm tired of having to refill it. I don't have easy access to refill station. So, I went with the ARB style twin compressor. We'll see. Planning on installing it in the bed on the builtright panel.

In the works...

Turned out great! I also put a breaker in the engine bay to disconnect from the battery when not in use.

looks great! i've been looking at a Viair setup and considering mounting it to the Builtright panels. any reason you didn't put the breaker in the bed so that you didn't have to pop the hood each time you use the compressor to engage/disengage the breaker for use?

Mainly for safety reasons. I mounted a bus strip in the bed for other electrical needs, and I did not want it hot all the time.

I mounted mine above the spare tire.

Any others with onboard compressors? What about the Morrflate?

So - got my Tremore in Feb/Mar and had a 2016 F150 with Ride Rite bags that I installed and purchased the wired compressor but never got around to installing. I tow a 21 ft travel trailer and purchased the Air Lift bags this time. Not wanting to spend even more money, I had the wired first one compressor installed and ran the lines to the bed panel like “fozzy” (Thanks for the idea) not wireless, but really clean and works great.
