Looks like I am in the market for a used truck for a few weeks or maybe months until I come off of Chip hold and the truck gets delivered.

I have always owned Toyota Tundra's... but I just got done looking at used ones and most have 200k+ miles for over $20k where I live. I don't know models and what to watch for with other trucks. I would really appreciate some recommendations on what F-150's (or other trucks) are better, which engine to get, etc. I will be using the truck to tow our boat that is 7k lbs...

I would kind of like to find a truck with the 3.5... but I'm not against buying something as old as a 2005 F-150 if the 5.4L was a great motor either.

Thanks in advance!

Here's a quick read:

Basically,
The best Ford F150s years are 1993, 1994, 1996, 2009, 2012, 2003, 2001, 2014, 2018, and 1998. While the worst F150 years are based on total complaints received by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, which are 2004, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2011, 2007, 2002, and 2010.

My 2015 was a great truck. Did start having problems around 170k miles.

In general, anything old and high mileage will have things starting to wear out no matter who owned it. You can try and gauge the previous owner to get a feel for how it was maintained. Whenever some one buys one of my vehicles they get full maintenance records and a modification log.

Good info, thanks. I hope I can find someone as meticulous as you! Would love to find anyone that cared about their stuff... right now in my search I'm just seeing other peoples problems.

I had a 2017 with 5.0 l engine and out of 150k miles I replaced the brakes, had the diffs serviced every 45 k and oil changed every 5 k, that was it, wasn't even planning to trade it for a couple more years till wife found my current 21 Tremor and said trade. Towed my tritoon Bennington no issues.

I would try to find something that will hold it's value when used cars pries start coming back to reality just in case you have long delays in getting your truck. Maybe a used F250 Tremor? I also see posts about guys getting the Ram TRX for around $8k under MSRP right now.
