Toyota Tundra
hi everyone

I have a paid off 2016 Toyota tundra SR5 off-road crew max with only 34,000 km.

I’m debating trading it for a 2022 tremor 401A that my dealer has in stock.

I use my truck for daily commutes but I also use it a lot to haul a 7x16 trailer and Polaris General 1000, with gear. I also use the same trailer for my two snowmobiles.

Dealer is probably going to give me between 37,000 and 40,000 for my tundra. MSRP on a tremor is 69,000. Rate is only 1.49. Noting that I am in Canada and will only have to pay sales tax on the net difference, so it makes sense to trade them to sell privately.

As it’s well-known, the tundra is very very thirsty and I’m hoping to save at the pump.

One of the main reasons in trading is the payload. My tundra has a payload of 1200 and this tremor has a payload of 1800. which doesn’t sound like a lot, but I believe I may be a little over on payload with my tundra most times when travelling with a trailer.

Obviously, this is a tremor forum, so there may be a little bias.

Am I making the right choice lol?

I came from a 2017 Tundra 1794 edition. I tow a 7500 lb trailer quite often at altitude. Between 4000-6000 ft elevation. It’s a night and day difference.

I loved my tundra but have been so happy with the Tremor. Don’t hesitate for a second making that jump IMO.

Thanks so much for the reply!

Do it you'll not regret your decision. This truck is so much more refined and better equipped than anything Toyota makes, I almost bought a tundra in 2017 for reference. A buddy saved me because he went down that rabbit hole coming from an f150 and regretted it.

I’m in Ontario and went from a 2010 gas guzzling hemi ram. Bought a 401a and absolutely love it. It is much better on fuel, pulls my 21ft boat, dump trailers, you name it. Super comfy and a very capable truck. I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger if you’re getting that much on your trade.

I had a 2014 Tundra Crewmax Limited. This was a great truck. I traded up to the Tremor because it had more capabilities than the Tundra. I never got real good fuel mileage with the Tundra, and I am impressed with the both the power and the MPG that I now get with the Tremor. The Tundra had almost 90,000 trouble free miles on it, and I can only hope that the same will be true for the Tremor.

Pull the trigger on your new Tremor - you should be happy.

What towing MPG were you getting with the Tundra and what do you get with the 3.5L.

I tow about 2 hours in total every weekend throughout the year. Is it worth to get the 3.5 over the V8 in the Tundra? I'm finding throughout my research that the 3.5 may be worse MPG than the 5.7 in the Tundra when towing.

Have you watched TFL when they do the Ike's gauntlet tow test?
If not check it out on YouTube.

That’s interesting! My situation could be a little different? But I love the Ecoboost over the V8. Meaning it’s the whole reason I bought a F150 and sold the Tundra.

So I live in Salt Lake and tow a boat around Utah in the spring through Fall. It’s a tall 11 feet of wind block and weighs around 7500-8000 depending on what stuff we have that day. I was getting 7-8 mpg with the Tundra and I haven’t dipped below 10 mpg with the Ecoboost.

A little back story. I live in Utah but bought my current boat in Charlotte, NC. I flew out there to pick it up and rented a F150 from Avis to tow it home. Everything went great on the drive home. No issues and it towed well. Granted this is just a regular F150 but it did have the Ecoboost.

I got home, returned the rental truck, then towed that first weekend with my Tundra. I was blown away at the difference in towing that boat with the Tundra. Headed up I-80 toward Park City I was at 4500 rpm to do 50 mph. With the Ecoboost? Never went above about 2500 rpm and could do 60 mph. So much more torque in the F150, especially at my elevation. It was such a dramatic difference I started my search for F150’s right away and I had zero plan on selling the Tundra before that. Within a month I had a new Tremor on order and had sold my 17 Tundra. I Don‘t regret it at all. I sold the Tundra for just under $40k. I have a truck 5 years newer with 80k less mile…. and light years ahead in tech. More power, Bluecruise, etc… and it was $23k more. It made total sense for me.

Great to hear all these positive stories!! I have an explorer sport with the 3.5 and I'm super impressed how it tows my XP4 and ATV on my 20ft Aluminum trailer (around 5,000lbs) Can't wait for my Tremor though!!

Thanks for the reply once again! This is the real world example I’m looking for.

I tow a 5500lb boat around. The 3.5 definitely uses more gas when towing, but not as much as my hemi did. Mine was a 2010 with 5speed. That 3.5 eco with the 10speed just floats along like it's barely working but once you put your foot into it, it wakes up and goes... Along with your fuel lol

If you watch TFL trucks they ran both the 3.5 and the 5.0 on the gauntlet and every other truck as well, what I've found is if you run normal the 3.5 slightly as in a tenth or so gets better mileage while towing, if however you drive aggressive the 5.0 gets slightly better.

This may be slightly off topic because my Tundra that I sold prior to purchasing the Tremor was the first generation. It was a 2000 year model TRD off road. Absolutely loved the truck, great memories and super reliable and fun to drive. But at 280k miles it was just getting way to old and out of my comfort zone taking the kids on big trips with or without the camper. It was a really good off roader, the perfect size to weight to power. I wanted to keep the truck but it just didn’t make any sense paying DMV and Insurance and maintenance. I was bummed but I sold it for nearly $10k after 22 years. It was unique Limited Edition. I also considered buying the new 22 Tundra but the designers and engineers totally screwed up that truck. Bought the tremor and never ever looked back, as a matter of fact I see a few new 22 Tundras and they are just off, they don’t look right and feel right unless you want to throw another 20k on top of $60k off the lot. At least you have a V8, I would rather have your older V8 Tundra then the new one. The new one falls short in everything:!

-poor visibility small windows and smaller interior cabin (felt it immediately when I test drove it.
-20” off road wheels? What the he’ll Toyota.
-no towhooks and plastic bumpers WTF?
-Truck is bigger then the older model but the cabin is a few inches smaller???
- too heavy? On the average the 22 TRD is 400lbs more than our tremors. Weight is king when off road or on sand and ice.
- the TRD Pro with the battery is almost 1,000 lbs more…. Not even going to mention… Way less payload
-Google everything in the new Tundra, I hate Goggle and all that subscribe for this and that. The truck beeps more than anything I have seen, check out other peoples videos.
- can’t use the locker in 4Hi, the locker system is not engaging properly, sometimes you have to back up? Hmmmmm when I’m in an awkward situation I need to back up?
- no front locker or better (Torsen like) front diff.
- you need to purchase steel bumpers with tow hooks, new wheels and tires and a 1”-2” lift kit that’s 20k minimum and then where is your warranty?
- when they came out with their v6TT I did not want to be the first to go through that learning process, ford has had years to develop and improve their v6TT.
- toyota did not listen to the people that actually drive and use their truck otherwise they would not have made those major blunders listed above. Why do I want to reward them with my money?

Considering all that, I bought the Tremor and never looked back. The Tremor while not perfect has the above figured out. More power to weight ratio. Great wheels and tires with 1” lift. Looks better, drives better in my opinion. Aluminum body that will not rust. I do wish my Tremor shifted better and had more off road parts support from the off road community, still waiting on the new Fox tremor specific coilovers. At this point I might go for the kings.

The part that pisses me off is that I waited so long for the 22 Tundra and real world reviews that I could no longer get an opportunity to buy a new Raptor at MSRP. Covid greed screwed that up. All Raptors ordered directly or not, have the dreaded $40k markup. Ok maybe now they can be had for less but not where I live.

The Tremor is the perfect choice for me and more than enough. I just want a better shock and level off the factory floor with warranty and good stock driving ability.

Ended up getting $37,500 for my Tundra. They had a 402A come in and I ended up taking that, in Black. Pick it up today!
Nice! I think you’re going to love it!
