Hey y’all was wondering on y’all’s opinions about the bakflip mx4. Wondering if it’d worth that hefty price tag. Also wondering how that matte finish compares to glossy ones

I have had 2 Lear and they were about 1200. this time I went with R/C it was about 400. less but I like to open mine up to use the hole bed. the R/C is just as good as the Lear, I think Matte is the way to go. I looked at the bakflip , just wouldn't work for me. By the way no water in mine at all.

Not sure if still the case, but you use to be able to direct message Real Truck and get a great price. I think my X4S was under $900 shipped, granted that was 2+ years ago, but was several hundred cheaper than I found elsewhere.

They may be on this board as well, I didn't look.

I have a BakFlip MX4 on my truck. I had a BakFlip on my previous truck and it worked well for what I needed. When I got my Tremor with the electric tailgate, I called BakFlip and asked which model they recommended to work. Ordered the MX4 directly from them. IIRC, there was a discount and it cost less than my previous Fiber version that I had installed by an accessory shop.

I have two complaints. 1) The plastic plugs at the end of the side rails have disappeared. Not a show stopper as they have zero function other than covering the exposed metal. 2) The side pieces at the hinge points often pop out of the bracket they're installed in and don't allow the cover to seat properly. Annoying. I try to pay attention to when I close the cover to make sure they are seated properly.

I also added the BakBox. I like having a built-in container for jumper cables, tow straps and shovel, etc. I used to have to keep a lot of that stuff under the rear seat or in the truck bed. Now it has a home that is out of the way. My only complaint about the BakBox is that even when folded up, it remains about six inches from the front wall of the bed. It's not removable without tools so this can be inconvenient if you need to use the full bed length for something. And while the BakBox is immune to moisture, it isn't immune to dust. I had a black Carhartt stored there which became tan colored.

Had the MX4 on a previous truck, and have decided I dont like the trifold covers and how they rest up against the cab and block the rear window when I need to drive with it open. I have the X4s on the Tremor, and it is hands down the best tonneau cover I have ever had. Personally I will only do hard roll up covers from now on.

Take a look at UnderCover.

I have the Bakflip LXP (MX4 but it has been factory Line-x’d) and I love it.

Come on grandma, that’s why Ford gave you a bed + tailgate camera!

I don’t have any experience with the rolling covers, but they seem expensive.

Haha. It wasnt about blocking the view (even though I look back and see thats all I posted about, and my older F150s didnt have bed cameras) as much as it was about the cover rubbing against the cab of the truck. The hard roll up covers are 10-20% more than the trifold, but if we are already talking $1k, IMO its worth a few hundred more for something that is a better product.

Have had 3 on my last 3 trucks. Love them! Durable, great protection, great value compared to others @ this price point!

I just went through this, I bought the BAK X4TS Revolver with the T Slots. Just installed it last evening so no input on durability but lots of opinions on the net.

Install was easy and works great with the BedRug that I installed on Sunday.

Fantastic cover!!!! Best part is you don't have to open the cover before you close the tailgate.
This is also true on many but not all tri-fold tonneau covers.

I looked at roll up covers, but didn't like the cost and the "permanence" of installation. The BakFlip MX4 is fairly easy to remove. The roll ups also have a large storage box at the front of the bed which takes up room. I didn't like that, but I can't complain since I installed a BakBox which does the same thing.

As for blocking the rear window, there is a bed camera on my Tremor which allows me to see the condition of the bed with the window blocked. Plus rear view mirrors and a rear view camera. It's not an issue. FWIW, the cover also provides protection to the rear window should you be carrying something that could crash forward toward the cab.

The big advantage to the roll up cover is you can use one with a rack system on the bed of the truck, if that's your thing.

I had the X4S, however it was difficult to use in cold weather and would not roll up. If I had it rolled up and it was cold, then it would not lay flat unless I put a heater in the bed and defrosted it. The MX4 is much easier to use in the cold weather. I am located in Michigan and it handled the single temp weather and latest snow storms much better than the X4S ever did.

Aside from moving up to a Diamondback Switchback, they are about as good as you will get for a tri-fold.

Bak has worked through the inherent security compromises as well as can be expected through the various generations. For example, it is rather difficult to "fish" the release cable with the cover closed, but you can always pry the cover up rather easily.

The Diamondback is much more secure, arguably more so than the cabin itself, but there are notable compromises (cost, fixed forward panel). If I was searching again, I'd likely go with the Diamondback for the extra piece of mind while travelling with stuff in the bed (wasn't available back in 2022).

I understand what you’re saying but a roll up tonneau cover and a canister rolled up tonneau cover are two different animals.

I have an MX4 on my 2013 fx4 6.5 that replaced a soft cover, my new to me Tremor has soft cover that I want to replace. Anyone know if the 2015-2020 5.5 mx4 works on our 2021+ trucks?

Plug your truck info into this site and it shows you the part number, should be able to tell if it will work from there....
