Gotcha…haven’t started yet.

Some background/planning:

After many hours of the utoobz for various other things, I have apparently been subconsciously brainwashed into wanting one of these. General idea is a utility trailer with a ladder rack slapped on it and a RTT on said rack. A couple friends and I have been kicking bits and pieces of different builds around and I’m starting mine shortly.

I’ll be starting with a 5x8’ light duty utility trailer. Partially because I don’t have anything big to cart around and partially because it’s a dirt cheap pickup from a neighbor. Plan is to keep it functional as a utility trailer when needed so I’m shooting for “can I fit a fridge or gun safe” measurement. Trailer has been sitting for a while so it currently has a natural outdoor camo of leaves, rust, moss, etc I will unfortunately need to remove.

First order of business is to drag it out of the neighbors yard and get to cleaning it up, doing some minor upgrades “while I’m in there”. I’ll be stripping it down, ripping out the wiring, and adding a couple of supports (possibly converting it from a 1 7/8” to a 2” coupler). I’ll be ripping out the wiring/lights and converting to 7pin and LED all around. Depending on how bad the hubs are I might have to, oh darn, go with a heavier duty axle like a 3500lb since I want to go axle over anyway. Most folks seem to either bob the tailgate or go with a bifold setup so it can still be used as a ramp - I haven’t decided on which yet but obviously with a shorter tailgate and a taller rig, I’d need to carry ramps. No decision on that just yet.

Once I get it to a good spot for the base I’ll work towards the rack system. Dinoot no weld corner brackets will likely be used though I likely won’t follow instructions and weld eventually. I’d like to make it height adjustable to satisfy my idiotic fridge height requirement. Leaning towards the OVS Nomadic RTT/270* awning to mount on said rack.

Along with the rack I’m looking to add receiver pockets for mounting cross bars similar to standard roof racks. I figure this could be used for hauling shit too large for the inside dimensions of the trailer and serve as a mount for roof bar kayak mounts. The bolt on retractable ratchet straps should serve multi purpose for kayaks/misc things that are hauled. Kayaks are 10ft+ thus the tailgate bob/bifold idea and crossbar height is yet to be determined. A 6”x8’ PVC pipe and locking endcaps (maybe 2) will hold fishing rods/anchor poles.

From there who knows…light bars, solar charging, electric brakes (mostly for manual parking brake functionality), general emergency cleanup gear, etc. This will serve as a bit of a stop gap until I get my larger camper, for exploring the vast elevation changes of Florida, kayak camping with friends, and general “I need to screw with shit and truck parts are expensive”

Thoughts, suggestions, experience from anyone that has done something similar welcome because apparently this forum is just a pit of people making other people spend money 🤣

Wall of text aside I’ll throw some updates together as they come…have a pic of a truck model no one here has seen before.

Trailer acquired. Needs love but the price (lack thereof) was right. Now to plan what I want to do for reinforcement and the like, strip it down, paint/rewire everything. Other shot is kinda what I’m going for.

Parts are pretty much all in just waiting on some square tubing. While I wait I cleaned off some of the stickers, pb blasted the shit out of a few things I'll be taking down soon (flipping the axle and replacing the tongue), and took some measurements. Didn't go too crazy knocking down the rust since its just an angle iron light utility trailer but wanted it to last a little longer than just leaving it; plus, I think it would look a little cooler. Threw some rust treatment/primer on all the parts I could easily reach and I'm not messing with anytime soon (tailgate is getting bobbed, fenders likely aren't staying, and the tongue is getting replaced) Harder to see I threw some jackstands under a couple spots and used the leverage to bend some things back since it's never had a tongue jack and used to carry loads of wood around.

Debating on the wiring conduits since they're probably going to get in the way of the rest of the project. Might cut them out completely, might just trim down the sections I need clearance, might overthink it and do something underneath with conduit. I resisted popping all the welds on the expanded metal to replace that/get after some other rusted sections as well as boxing off portions of the frame so maybe I can resist the conduit craziness and KISS.

Once the tongue/coupler, new wiring, and lights are on it gets drug over to a buds place to flip the axle and get bigger trailer tires. Tailgate bob and fenders will depend how she sits with the flip and the larger rolling diameter. From there...measurements for the true shenanigans begin!

Rust treated, primed, painted, waiting on a damn 2x3” 5’ section to fix the tongue and some lights to come in before I rewire. Did find some 6”x10’ pvc finally do the rod tube will likely be done before the damn kayak racks. Lot of work to make a black trailer black I know.

Got semi motivated and flipped the axle. Picked up about 3.5" so it sits a little closer to Tremor height (aside from the bent ass tongue...still hunting for steel) Fenders will definitely need to be at least trimmed for the 205/75's but I think I'm going to shoot for 14s to start and see how that sits. Going straight to 205/75/15s I'd probably have to completely strip the fenders off and I'm not that motivated with this project yet.

Hubs and 205/75s next. Hopefully I can get the new steel for the tongue and at least my kayak racks soon. Finished the fishing rod tube over the holiday but I have nothing to mount it to and no rod socks made yet so it just looks like a giant gray bong/potato gun atm.

Did 15s anyway cause I’m impatient and they were cheaper than 14s. Fender mods next I guess

Really enjoying following your build!

Looking good

Trimmed the fenders a hair. Figured if I needed more I’d trim more…measure nonce cut 47 times status. First round seems like it will be fine for what I need so, that’ll be it until something comes up and or I get a wild hair up my ass to swap em. They were never intended to be the final form but also not exactly high on the list of priorities aside from clearance.

Had about 13.5” to the bottom of the trailer right next to the spring bolt (not going off suspension/mounts just a rough estimate constant area) and looks like between the axle flip and the 205/75/15 I’ll be at 20.5” to the same spot.

Just a dry fit but new hubs go on soon then the old wheels go to pasture and the new ones get a forever home.

Got bored and did my rod socks. Used 3/4" wire loom and some heat shrink tubing from the cockrocket dude. Test fit in the tube went well...looks like I can fit 4 casting rods and my anchor pole without issue. Could probably tetris in a couple more casters without issue. Need some 1" to do socks for my spinning reels but I have to loosen the handle on my 2500 to get it to fit so no high hopes for packing anything more than that guy.

rod sock material:
rod tube cap:
6"x10' PVC came from big blue home store
rivets/silicone came from general kayak shenanigans drawer

New bearings/hubs and got both the 15s mounted up. No more dry fit and guess work. Fenders seem like they’ll be fine under load but once I run out of shit to fiddle with I’m sure they’ll get attention. Will likely fart with some measurements this weekend and chop the tailgate down.

No more ramp gate…new piece of angle iron will be going on top to cap it off if this stew ever shows up. Debating what I’m going to do with how it folds. It doesn’t flop vertically but not perfectly level with trailer. I might build in some stops and/or chains so it lays level. Might cut the whole thing off/swap hinges…time will tell.

It’s a little higher than the side rails since there will be a tongue box out front about the same height. My kayaks will have to clear that anyway so figured I might as well make the tailgate same height. Can always cut more if I need/want…Never measure cut 47 times

Well ya get what you (dont) pay for. Trailers a little tweaked so old tongue is back on and new tongue will have to wait; which blows cause I hate short tongued utility trailers. Kayak racks have been roughed in and I've been dragging ass due to arboreal bukakke (dont google that) and trying to figure out where I want to actually put them. Ended up just cutting the old wiring tubes out completely and I'll worry about hiding all that crap later. Once I get the "receivers" for the yak racks figured out and in a permanent home I'll tighten everything up and mount the J hooks/rod tube. Hopefully we quit getting 4 seasons in a week and I can get on the water at least. No tent deals during any of the holidays...dammit
