I've never tinted the windows in a vehicle before but wanted to get the front windows of the truck tinted.

What level of tint you guys doing? You just matching the back windows? Do you actually try to stay within the legal limit or don't care?

Gleaning from other posts, it sounds 20-25% will get you close to matching the back. I will do 20% on mine. It gets 115 in summer where I live so most cops won’t ticket for tint unless you’re really asking for it.

Get it matched. Doesn't look right when there are two different tints.
Agreed ^^^. I have no idea what percentage it is but if you tell them to match the back they will. Also, any darker than that and it’s just a nuisance at night.

I just matched the back and it’s nice. But wish I would have went a little darker on front and back instead. But I don’t worry about legal limit.

In Hawaii we have tint laws of no darker than 35% for cars all around but able to go as dark as you want for Trucks and SUVs just for the rear windows. I added Ceramic tint all around including front windshield which isn't legal here. I went 35% front and 20% back. Front Windshield is clear just to block the UV rays but it also helps with glare.

What was explained to me is Factory tint is more just colored glass. Doesn't really block the UV rays or heat transmission compared to aftermarket tint. Tint guy put a heat lamp against the rear windows compared to ceramic tinted window. Big difference. I didn't want the rear to be too dark especially at night so went with the 20%. I believe it is darker than 20% due to the factory colored glass already there. Yes it does look a little messed up cause 2 different shades of tint front and rear but I have to say it made a world of difference. I don't really feel any heat from the sun. A/C seems to work more efficient and dashboard doesn't get hot. Also seems to be more clear thorough the front when driving in general during the day and night. I think it is due to the reduction of glare from the Windshield tint.

20% for front windows was a match for the back.

35% is the darkest legal here in the commonwealth. Grumble grumble grumble

I’m having Xpel Ceramic tint out in this Wednesday.

Planning on Windshield
Sunroof
Back Windows Clear

Maybe 35% in front which gets me close to the back so it matches.

Mainly going ceramic for heat rejection properties. Have run a lot darker in the past in my previous vehicles but the older I get the more the night driving bothers me with the darker rear windows.

Here’s a picture of my driver and passenger side windows matched to the factory rear tint. It’s a pretty close match. I also have the sunroof shade open on this pic. Hope this helps.

Double check me, but I believe factory "tint" is really just dye they add in the glass making process and while it adds some privacy, it doesn't really help from a UV related heat and damage standpoint. I'm planning on adding some clear or light tint with the protection qualities I'm looking for on top of the factory "tint" for this reason.

As far as legality, my personal experience has been if you get pulled over for speeding, an energetic trooper will then take the opportunity to check your tint and, if you live in a state that requires it, ask why you're not running a front license plate!

The tint guy metered the back glass and it read 28% so that’s with 35 ceramic on the front and 50 on the moonroof. Backs have no film yet but will probably get them clear. It’s plenty dark but not bad at night

Ah that looks close.

35 is the limit here. Might be worth staying inside the limit if its that close. Can you tell a difference in person?

Started with a plan to just match the fronts, but wanted a little darker. After talking with my tint guy, ended up on a three stage layering with 25% on the fronts, 45% on the rear and then 35% on the back. It's slightly darker than stock and with the ceramic film it really helps with the SoCal heat.

That’s nice! I’ll be doing 35% as well, it’s the legal limit here and the bastards meter it at inspection time…..

Will probably do 20-25% all around, with ceramic tint for the heat, and a clear ceramic tint on the sunroof and windshield. Could go darker since Miami is dark tint central but it gets too dark for my taste at night time.

Hey SDTremor.
I'm also in SD. I will be getting my Silver 2022 402A late Feb! Stoked.
Question:
Do you ever worry about getting pulled for the tint? I am always tempted to get my cars tinted, but I don't want to go through the hassle of removing it for a fix-it. Since I have never done it I don know the likely hood of SDPD or the Sherriff pulling ya over. I don't want to jinx you, but have you ever had an issue?

Here in Oklahoma I’ve never had an issue with having dark tint. Not saying what I’ve had isn’t illegal, just found that most police aren’t looking for it specifically. Plus, we don’t have vehicle inspections here either. No idea what the percentages are, but I did what I normally do…slightly darker on rears and back glass, fronts to match the dark rears, and a brow on windshield. All ceramic tint.

Now that's how a truck should look. The tint is almost mandatory.
