For those of use blessed with ice and snow, currently - 37c in the wind here. I wanted to see what others were using for weight in their beds for extra traction. Right now I have 12 sand bags, and it's helped quite a bit. Bonus is in those extreme situations where I might need to get myself unstuck I can just rip a bag open. Has anyone determined an ideal weight on these crappy tires?

i really wanted a dedicated winter tire so i got some budget friendly hercules avalanche TT studded boy what a difference in the snow/ice i was surprised how much of a difference there was from a brand new A/T tire, unless your in deep snow no real need to use 4wd. i would think 12 sand bags would be pretty ideal weight to have on hand tho

I was pondering studding my older winter tires but their performance on asphalt is horrid. These A/Ts are not great on snow and ice that's for sure.

Another option if your not in the market for a dedicated winter tire would be getting the a/T’s sipped

That's a good idea, I might do that to my aging dedicated cooper winter tires off my 2018.

You do realize you can stud the generals, then come spring buy the set you want.

I don't spend enough time off asphalt to make that an option. I have cooper winters on rims at 5 seasons that I can stud if need be.

Did a little research, nobody in my city does that to tires, and I was told it's not reccomended on AT tires because of how cold it gets here it actually makes the stopping and performance worse.

That's weird, the generals are prepped for studding, you can actually do it yourself, but once done that's all you can use them for. Here in TN the grabbers work great, but we get wet snow, as for ice they work ok but I personally think the falkens work better on ice.

Wierd what’s an average winter temp where’s you are ?
I would have to google that because it fluctuates so much. It's been 5F to - 20 in just the past 2 weeks.

Do you know if our version of the grabbers (standard load) can be studded? I can't say I know anything about putting studs on a tire but would guess the weight and thickness has something to do with it.

They can, I noticed the holes for the studs at the dealership.

Have any of you guys put Falken AT3's on and if so, how do you like them for ice/snow?

I ran the falkens for 3 yrs on my fx4, I personally loved the tire in all conditions, averaged 65k+ on the mileage per set. They work great on wet, snow, as good as can be for a non studded tire on ice. They blew the hankooks out of the water on those 3.

That's generally been the feedback I've gotten on them in the 4runner forums. Some of the more recent concerns on the Falken were availability and the fact that some of them are being built in China.

Has anyone considered the Wrangler Duratracs with studs? They work pretty well as it is without the studs.

Most of the falkens are built in Thailand not China, I know it's not much different, but they should have a pretty good stock here in the US as that's there largest market. Duratracks are good tires just a little weak on the sidewalks, but then again my only experience with them was when I was in the Army.
