Building My Tremor - 3.5 EB or 5.0?

Is there an upgrade for the tranny to match the Whipple so you can get the full benefit?
Not that I know of from factory, but surely aftermarket? It may not be an immediate grenade either but a shortened life. We're talking 590 lb-ft with factory warranty though, so a couple hundred more than stock. It's a blast so not sure the added cost and risk is worth the trade-off, but we all have our own priorities and risk tolerance.

Oh, likely worth the risk, especially with upgraded tranny et al, but I need a job that pays actual money first. 🤑

I'm averaging 20 highway and 17.0 city.
Sorry for the late reply here, but interesting! My average, since driving away from the dealer and at about 9000 miles, is about 14.4MPG highway, city- doesn't matter. I have briefly seen 15mpg on some road trips, and admittedly I do have several hundred pounds of weight in the back, but this 14.4 was the average before I put a truck cap on and the drawers in, and everything else that adds weight. The average MPG hasn't gone down any since putting those things in, or the new tires on, so that's good, but I was expecting closer to the 20/17 you're getting especially before adding the weight. I don't drive too fast or erratically, so it's not that, and it's been "offroad" a bit but not enough to affect the mpg, especially on a tank-by-tank basis.

It doesn't improve much on the highway either, or in Eco mode. So, I dunno...

I haven't actually sat down to calculate the MPG, so maybe that will show a different picture. I have a road trip coming up here in a few days so maybe I can try that.

Ford has fixed most of the 3.5 common problems and they redeveloped the cam phaser in 2022. It’s still a bit early, but I am hoping the new phasers are good to go. The 5.0 also experienced these issues, but not as frequently as the 3.5. I looked forever for a 5.0 after I sold my 7.3 Tremor, and I couldn't find one. I went with the 3.5 and I am very happy with the truck so far. The 5.0 sounds better, and to date it has been more reliable. The 3.5 has more power and performs better at elevation. They both get similar MPG’s and the 5.0 can be supercharged, providing 700 horsepower. Doing this will void your warranty, but who doesn’t want 700 hp 😂 The 3.5 has twin turbos, which is awesome, but turbos eventually die. Now that I have the 3.5, I really like it and it is a blast to drive on and off road. Tough decision, but for your purposes, it sounds like both will fit the bill. Having said that, I would get the extended warranty and drive the crap out of whatever model you choose. Good luck. 👍
They actually fixed phaser starting in 21

I average 16.2, mostly in town with some highway. 3.5 EB with a RTT and larger wheels/tires.

I have no explanation for your fuel mileage. After 14 months and 11,500 miles (including 3 overlanding trips above 7,500 feet) my overall average is 18.7 mpg. I'm not a leadfoot, but I'm no slowpoke. Don't believe some of the Coyote hate on this forum, the engine rocks and their heads are sore knowing that they could have had a V8.

Cope much?

That's an excellent point. They may have turbos but our is called "Coyote" which is way far cooler  . Good thing the V8 doesn't sound like coyotes, though...

Nothing against V8s, I love em too, but I prefer having the quieter motor with more performance. Something about louder and slower reminds me of "all hat no cattle".

We used to build engines to get 400hp. I'll take that and the reliability of the V8. That's plenty of cattle.

The 3.5 is a good motor, and I doubt either of us uses all the torque that either offers. If I need more I'll throw the Whipple on. I have over 200k on my 2001 5.4 and I plan on at least that on my 2023 Tremor. Good luck with yours.

I just calculated my mpg on a largely expressway drive today (362-ish miles) and the truck said 16.3mpg but I calculated 15.6mpg. Either way, not very high.

And just to throw some fuel on the fire, the 3.5 V6 sucks and anyone who buys a V6 hates their mothers!

Hahaha just kidding!!! It was a really tempting option with the additional torque that it offered over the V8, and I might’ve gone that route (fwiw) if I planned to tow more. I just heard that the V8 was more reliable and I didn’t have to worry about the turbos. And, for me with a V8, adding a winch didn’t require moving the intercooler and paying extra for that kit.

So many videos I watched before buying talked about how good the V8 sounded over the V6, and it does sound better, I think, but that sound (like the Active Orange accents) isn’t a good reason to buy it over the V6, obviously.

I’m not so much an ardent proponent of the V8 as I am someone who is torn between the two.

Just to throw fuel on the fire, the 3.5 is an upgrade option on the buy sheet for a reason. Whether you like it or hate it, facts are facts. This whole 3.5 vs 5.0 debate reminds me of politics, are you going to vote on facts or emotion? The 3.5 is a more powerful motor, period. The 5.0 sounds better. As far as the 5.0 being more reliable, is this anecdotal or does anyone have data to show motor failure rates for either since 2021?

The V6 Trumps the 5.0 on power. See what I did there? 😆

I think everyone wil agree but then add their own preferences to the above. If one adds a supercharger it’s no contest - the 5.0 is the best engine of any truck made for this with the best results and bang for buck. Hard stop. Jealous of yall that added a supercharger. 😁

Theres also a lot of truth to getting an engine with the history of the 5.0 (even though it’s a different engine) from the ice ice baby days to present. Then there’s a lot of truth to grabbing a V8 while you can since they seem to be on the endangered species list these days.

If there was no 3.5 eco, I likely would choose the 5.0 but prefer the Chevy 6.2 torque advantage (has reliability issues tho) and next year the dodge ram will have a beast of a 6 cylinder turbo (looks to be more powerful than anything Ford has in a half ton).

We are living in a wonderful time to be a truck buyer/driver. Love my truck and would still love it if I had a 5.0.

Agree on the SC however that is a whole other conversation. Mod for $ spent is in favor of the EB until the SC comes into play but then you are talking $10,000 modification at that point.

But it’s a Dodge/ Fiat/ RAM.
