CarPlay Freezing and Restarting

As mentioned earlier, since I updated to ios18 I have not experienced the issue. I use the USB most of the time and sometimes leave my phone in my pocket and use BT.

My CarPlay just stopped working…connects wireless but only works on incoming calls. When connected to cable says usb not responding, tried new cable still nothing. When you go into settings it shows connection

Have you tried a Master Reset of the SYNC system?
Do you know how to do it?

No
Please share procedure
Start the vehicle, on the SYNC screen tap Settings, Select General, scroll down and tap Master Reset.
Confirm that all settings will be erased and reset to factory defaults.
Tap Continue.
The system will turn off, the screen will go blank, and it may take a few minutes to reset.

Same. I haven’t noticed a restart since updating. Granted, I haven’t driven very long durations recently. 30-40 minutes typically.

I have had any lockups since my first post here. But then i Drove it 4 hours round trip on Friday. Had the system lock up and reboot once on the way out, with several reboots in a row before returning to normal then once on the way back. I felt like it happened in roughly the same spot going and coming back, but not sure. Either way it was kinda out in the middle of nowhere.

Then I drove 10 hours round trip on Sat/Sun and it didn’t lock up once. I don’t know what to make of it.

I’ve upgraded to IPhone 16 Pro Max since my first post, so that changed one of the test variables.

My Tremor has done this for a while. I have done the master resets and they don't seem to work in my case. I am convinced it is more of a phone issue than a Sync issue. I found a recent post where an Apple tech advised a person to delete the phones from the Sync system, perform a RESET NETWORK SETTINGS (iPhone) on the phone and then add the phones back. I tried this yesterday and no restarts so far.

This happens to me as well, and is definitely geographical in nature. Same places. Since updating to iOS18 it has improved in the regular places it used to happen to the point I don’t always plug in now on my normal commute, but still happened on a road trip over thanksgiving in other places. I had been in the habit of always plugging in and even killing WiFi on my phone to force wired connection, that worked 100% of the time. So it’s a WiFi interference issue. (Remember CarPlay uses Bluetooth to initiate the connection but the actual wireless data link is over WiFi)

I’m pretty sure it’s a truck/sync issue and not just the phone, or at least a combination of the two. Reason being I rented a grand wagoneer for 9 days and connected wirelessly to CarPlay in it every day and never had a hiccup, drove close to 1,000 miles across multiple states. Which is annoying as other than that my confirmation bias that ford does everything better than Stellantis/jeep was confirmed, except for CarPlay.

I took my truck into the shop last week for a rear differential leak and while they had it I asked them about CarPlay resetting. The AV specialist told me the CarPlay issue was a known issue and they were waiting for a fix from ford and that ford instructed them not to throw any parts at it right now. But then they ended up replacing the APIM module, so go figure. Just got the truck back and haven’t put many miles on it yet to say if it made any difference.

I've had Car play issues since day one almost 2 and a half years ago with my 22. The most frequent problem is no sound even though it says it's playing. The only fix is to turn my truck off open the door and start over. Dealer said there is nothing wrong with it on multiple occasions. there is also a quarter mile stretch I drive every day that causes the system to completely kick me off Car play then it comes back on as I drive out of the area.

I don’t think I’ve noticed a single CarPlay freeze up since they replaced my APIM - until last weekend. I drove two hours to go hunting and normally have 2-3 freezeups along the way so I was paying attention. There’s some industrial plant that I pass by and it always seems like it freezes there and sure enough it did. Spotify started skipping and shortly after CarPlay bombed out hard and wouldn’t reconnect. Had to Vol/Seek cycle it multiple times to get it back. same thing happened on the return drive when I passed that same plant. On the return drive I barely noticed it though, because I didn’t have Spotify playing, and I didn’t have audio to hear it crap out. I could only really tell because navigation momentarily skipped and then we caught up. CarPlay didn’t actually completely freeze up and crash. That seems to be the worst when I have Spotify playing. So it could be that I’m getting multiple dropouts all the time and just not noticing them without audio. I’d say 80% of the time I drive around without any audio playing.

Long winded way of saying replacing the APIM module didn’t fix the problem. It would be interesting to take some sort of spectrum analyzer and drive by that plant and see what kind of frequency there are stomping all over if these issues truly are related to RF shielding
