Front bumper lower opening or void? What is the purpose?

Hello everyone. Does anyone happen to know what the front bumper void is for? Is it for a winch? More air flow? If there a way to have a mesh screen or some kind of filler so there is not just an empty cavity there?

Ecoboost has some cooling needs in there does it? i have a front lisence plate and looking to add a couple lights on either side...That sould just about Block it!
