Spray on Wax

You wash the vehicle. Then use the synthetic clay bar. There will be instructions on how to lubricate it. You want to keep the surface of the vehicle wet while you use the bar. You need the lubrication so the bar slides. If it starts catching you need more lubrication. After you get done using the bar. Put on a wax of your choice. Some detailers recommend barring the paint before you wax it every time.

First I ever heard about these items. Do you use all three items at the same time or just one of them?

No, just one of them. They are just alternatives to clay. All do the same but just in different form for what suits you. Some like the towel, some like the sponge. They last longer than clay, are easier to work with and all you have to do is rinse them off.

There are wash mitts out there too. So as a short cut, when you wash your truck, have a clean bucket of soap water and use the mitt to go over the truck after you washed it, before drying.

Big key is to NOT use pressure when using clay or synthetic clay. Just let it slide over the paint with the gravity of the clay.

Yes, you should do this anytime you add a protective layer like wax or a sealant. Think of it like painting. You wouldn’t paint over a dusty surface because the paint would not adhere properly. Same with paint. There are things on the paint that just don’t come off with regular washing.

Also, keep in mind, claying removes wax and sealant for the most part so don’t do it unless you plan to put on a protective layer afterwards.

One more tip, if using a quick detailer when you clay, wash the truck afterwards because the QD will leave something on the paint. Also a IPA wipe will work. Some companies have a dedicated “panel wipe” product out there they recommend using, especially before ceramic coating.

1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Wash or IPA/panel wipe
4. Apply protection

Skip the clay bar, and get a synthetic clay sponge or towel. It’s less aggressive and won’t mar as much as clay. Also, it’s always reusable, if you drop clay on the ground you have to trash it.

Here’s an example

Just got the clay wash cloth to use on my wife’s 2017 Explorer that has been neglected and sitting under a pecan tree gathering sap. This works really well, one wash and it’s smooth. Went with the Maguire’s spray wax.
