Unless my torsen is broken, you can definitely tell when it engages

I've never had a torsen make any noise. I have one in the rear end two other trucks and they get used regularly - nothing but traction.

Take a look at some of the youtube videos on how they work - they're just helical gears. Nothing to make noise.

I tried my this past weekend,and it worked. It says to turn your steering wheel to full lock. You will hear your ABS braking working. The ABS is loud.
