I haven't found anything but taking a few day camping trip with my son and a couple of his friends to Badin Lake first week of April. I have read they have some trails in that area but will be focused on fishing and kicking back for a few days. We need to get a Tremor NC group together for possible meet ups/camping/trails, etc.

Include me in that group as I’ll be an Asheville area resident by the end of the year! Really looking to do some off roading that isn’t just flat sugar sand.

Unfortunately, most of our offroad trails here are more suitable for jeep/tacoma widths. Not to say out Tremors won't handle them, but you may have to be OK with some pinstripes.

Asheville and western NC are gorgeous areas. I lived there from 2010-2017. The weather is the absolute best, nice 4 seasons, plenty of sunshine, low humidity.
It is getting VERY crowded though, I just drove through there a few weeks ago and I26 is under sone serious construction which causes backups all day long. I’m sure it’ll be great when it’s done.
My biggest issue with NC in general is the taxes. Property tax, personal property tax, gasoline tax, income tax, all of it is high. Not Californian high, but still higher than say Florida.
example, tag renewal on my 2012 Raptor was $600 per year in NC (registration, plus personal property tax, plus vehicle safety and emission inspection) compare that to Florida where it was $98 for 2 years renewal.
Currently I live in eastern TN, tax rates are much closer to Florida and still get the 4 seasons. Knoxville is a bigger town than Asheville so we get concerts and shows and events here Asheville doesn’t get much, for the big name stuff you’ll be heading down to Greenville (about an hour away) or Charlotte (2 hours) for any headline type events.
As far as off-roading and our door activities go, western NC and eastern TN and N Georgia are great places in the east to go. I’m happy to put together a run in any of those areas if there’s interest. I’ve done WindRock, Uwarrie, plus some other hidden gems in NC and N GA.
Hopefully this gives you guys some additional info on the area.

Circling back on this. Big thank you to everyone who's shared their input! We're headed up this weekend for a week to scope out some different areas and the neighborhoods within those areas.

@Bannerman I appreciate the extensive information. We're in FL now, but not really beach goers. It would likely be different if the waves were surfable on the gulf coast. The mountains are a big draw for us, but we also value "city" conveniences. We definitely have some neighborhoods in the Charlotte area on our itinerary. (PM'ing you for more Charlotte details.)

@Escape Hatch If Colorado were a "green" state for both of our jobs, that would be ahead of NC in terms of where'd consider moving next. Chasing snow sports and winter activities is how we've spent a lot of our travel budget in recent years. Haven't visited the Appalachian Mountains in the winter, but something tells me we'd still be heading out west at times in the winter. The east coast are hills compared to the Rockies, but we'll take it over the flat land of FL where the local bridge over the bay is the most elevation we'll see. I appreciate the input on the school districts. It will matter in a few years, so it's best to start planning early.

when I lived there, I could find inspection places that would look the other way with tint and emissions, but those places are becoming harder to find. The tint will be your biggest issue, I was able to skirt by since I knew the majority of the officers (I put in their emergency lights and equipment) so they left me alone. My wife got pulled over a few times for her window tint, but they let her go when they realized who it was LOL
Honestly the vehicle inspection thing is a joke…..I have never seen so many unsafe cars on the road as I had in Asheville. All with current tags.
Definitely look at the taxes there, it can be a real eye opener, it was for us our first year. Asheville can get snow in the winter, but it’s very unpredictable. In our 7 years there, 3 of those years we barely got a dusting. Our first year we got 8” on Christmas Day, and few other significant snows. Our last year we had an 18” total in 36 hours. A rarity for the area. Thing will shut down when it’s snowing too, schools, stores, everything. They don’t know how to deal with snow like they do up north and out west.
If you are considering Western NC, take a look at East TN. Especially Knoxville and east, you’ll get the same kind of terrain and views that NC has but with a much better tax rate, and most counties don’t have vehicle inspections in TN.

Big thanks again to everyone who provided their input. We scouted out the state via a week long road trip, and everyone's comments were pretty much spot on. What we didn't expect was how similar FL and NC can be once you're outside of the mountains (referring to the major metros). We're going to sit tight for now but continue to visit the state on road trips in our new Tremor.

@Escape Hatch Some action shots (attached) at Tail of the Dragon and Sebring along with the final state before I started returning it to stock in preparation for the Tremor. This MK7 DSG (SE) was my second GTI (first was a MK5 6MT). I loved it - the perfect do everything car at it's price point.

• Clubsport S Muffer
• Stoptech slotted front rotors
• RS3 brake air ducts
• Motul RBF600
• ...the rest is cosmetic

Bringing it back to trucks, the Tremor's claimed 13.9s @ 100mph stock trumps a stock MK7 GTI's 14.6s @ 96mph, which is a nice bonus on top of all of the rest of the Tremor's utility.

The mk7 is a phenomenal little car and rips. I had the EQT Vortex XL on pump tuned by Ed with several other mods. Though it was fun I do not miss it to be honest.

EQT is the way to go, and it sounds like a rocket! The EA888 has so much potential while returning 30+ mpgs.

I can’t say I miss mine either, but I do have fond memories. It was perfect when my situation (read: budget) was more constrained and I had to pick a single car to daily+participate in motorsports. And the community is pretty cool (and spans a few VAG brands).

The Tremor is similar (though on the the other end of the spectrum). You get so much functionality, comfort/luxury, and performance for the price. The Tremor gives you access to most truck things without major compromise.
