I wanted to open up this thread to discuss opinions on tire brands for specific uses. Effectively if we could gather a consensus on the best mall crawler, towing, AT and advanced off road in a single location. it may help those who are looking for recommendations for their use.

I'll keep a running tally on this post specific to the above categories (or more if there is enough interest.

Mall Crawling (Taking that adventure to wherever you can) - comfort, pavement (wet, dry and snow) traction, quiet, long tread life, reduced rolling resistance (MPG), moderate towing (up to 8000 pounds regularly), some light off roading with no expected tire hazards.
stock/OE SL rated General Grabber ATx - very good off road traction, thin sidewalls, quiet on road, excellent wet and snow road traction - unknown mileage

Towing (From road warrior to load warrior) - Durability, Traction (pavement wet, dry, snow 3 peaks rated), comfort/quiet, treadwear, MPG

All Terrain
(The do-all, be-all tire that can) - Traction on road (wet dry and 3 peaks rated), off road (moderate off roading, fire roads, mud, sand, smaller rocks, hard pack snow), quiet, towing, D rating or above sidewalls, tread wear and MPG
Toyo Open Country III
- good off road traction, moderate to strong sidewalls, noticeable noise on road, moderate wet and snow traction - expect 40,000+ miles
WILDPEAK A/T3W -
Nitto Terra Grapler G2 -

Advanced off road (Because who would want to drive around with these on the street, on purpose) - off road traction (wet, dry, sand, clay, rocks, snow), strong sidewalls and minimum D rated - noise, MPG, towing, tread life all secondary - These may not be the best daily driver treads
Cooper Discovery STT Pro
- great off road rock/mud/sand traction, very tough, moderately noisy on road, medium wet and snow traction - expect 40,000 miles
Grabber X3 - https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/2001-general-grabber-x3-8000-miles-rocks-roadways-sand-snow/
GEOLANDAR M/T G003 - These have had consistently good reviews (F rated available)

So with my new tire size requirements, I'll be looking for a replacement for my STT pros. AT tires need not apply as these will be specific to moderate and advanced off road use.

I can chime in on Toyo Open Country AT/3
- Ride quality 4/5 (better than BFK K/O IMO but not as nice as Michelin LTX)
- Offroad traction - No real opinion on this.
- Longevity 5/5. I got about 90k out of my first set and have about 50k on my second set with 70%+ tread left
- Noise 4/5. Not noisy at all when new. As they wear down they get louder but it's not like a M/T or louder than any other A/T tire.

When my stock tires wear out I will replace with these.

Yeti check out the grabber X3, I have heard good things from my buddies who belong to a Jeep offroad club, I had to change from running the grabber at2 with my last truck because they didn't make the tire size I wanted, after 2 months of research I decided to try the falken at3w, those tires impressed me alot, excelled at everything I threw at them, even did ok in red clay which was surprising, averaged around 65k on them.

First post for me but I’ve been lurking for a while. Lots of great information being exchanged here. I’ll be following this thread closely.

Ive enjoyed the ride comfort with factory set up and want to keep that with a taller tire and leveling. Open to coil overs or just a spacer.

My 2015 FX4 Was a pretty rough ride with icon stage 2 and LT285/60r20 duratrac. It rode more like a 3/4 ton I’ve had. I pulled the truck behind my Motorhome so I liked the LT tire to mitigate a blowout(ruined a wheel that way).

ive since sold Motorhome and have nothing at the moment more than 7500lbs to pull so interested in 34-35inch D tire. There aren’t many options that I’ve seen other than maybe 1-2 from toyo and nitto.

Welcome! Hopefully we'll have some good feedback here to help us each get where we want to be.

Those do look good. And I'm coming to terms with only being able to run 295/70s. With tires and harder off road, bigger is always better but I can't say I've ever used a 34" tire so it may not be a thing. 33s to 35s are a massive difference. 35s to 37s are definitely better but not the increase like when you get those 35s.

I'm currently undecided on skinny 35s or wider 34s. A popular youtuber buddy in Australia has led the charge against "wider is better" and it's difficult to argue his points (plus he's pretty stubborn). The only real exception I have with skinny (still 11.5" wide) is for mud or Georgia clay (that stuff is slicker than owl crap).

I'm currently researching Goodyear Duratrack and MTR, General Grabber X3 (thanks @FaKtor34 ) Nitto and Falkens.

I've always been a wider for mountain and skinny for winter but that's just me. Also run a 17" rim in winter.

I will most likely stick with the 18" for summers just getting a tire with a better rating as these OEM sidewalls worry me when off-roading.

Oh I'm also looking into GEOLANDAR M/T G003 - SIZE: LT305/70R18 or LT 35X12.5

they are slightly shorter and the tread pattern is slightly narrower than my beloved STT Pros.

Welcome. Funny you say this. I had the same setup (Icon stage 2) on the same truck as you with the exception being my tires were Toyo. I thought the ride quality was terrible and I’ve always blamed the Icons.

That being said, for an AT tire I’ve drank the Kool Aid and I’m 100% sold on the Toyo Open Country AT3.

Pavement: 5/5
Normal Mud (not that bumper deep crap): 3.5/5
Winter Roads: 5/5
Road Noise: 4/5
Tread Wear: 5/5
Wet Pavement: 4.5/5

Just my .02, but I think they are a great all around tire.

My son has the FX4 w/Icon set up now and isn’t into the aesthetics of a leveled truck so I ordered the spanner from icon and turned then down about 1.25” to where is about 7/8” of threads showing. It did seem to help the ride a little but now there is a rake and but still no comparison to my stock Tremors ride.

your post has got me rethinking a load E tire which opens up a lot more tire options bc I assumed the LT tire was a big part of the stiff ride.

Can anyone comment on the Mickey Thompsons Baja Boss A/T's? been studying those as future replacements?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely not going to ride as nice with them or any 10 ply as it does with the factory Grabbers. I should’ve been a little more specific and I’ll say for a 10 ply the ride is 4/5. I can’t say enough good about them really though and I’ve had multiple sets. I had the factory Hankook AT tire when I first got the Icon and it rode bad then too so I blame the majority of it on the Icon. I don’t think the 20” rims did it any favors either.

Nitro Mud Grappler
Road Noise: 1/5
Tread Wear 1/5
Winter Roads: 3.5/5
Deep Mud: 5/5
Cool Factor: 10/5

If you care about nothing except for going through deep mud and looking cool, these tires are for you! They sound like a cross between a Boeing and a B John Deere going down the highway and you won’t get very many miles out of them, but they’ll eat mud and they look nasty.

Toyo Open Country R/T
Road Noise: 3.5/5
Tread Wear: 4/5
Winter Roads: 4/5
Mud: 4/5
Wet Pavement: 2/5

Overall, these are a nice looking and fairly well rounded shoe. The big downfall to me was the wet pavement traction. They broke free quite a bit when taking off in the rain and it made me skeptical of putting much trust into them when the roads were wet.

I know people do run a 12.50 on a factory wheel but what’s the general consensus here? although these might rub even with level.

Yeah, the icons (and eibach) are digressive, you won't like them until you're on the trail

All Terrain - I had a set of Nitto Terra Grapler G2's on my '13 Lariat, and they were amazing.
Snow / Ice - 4/5
Mud - 5/5
Rocks - 4/5
Highway Noise - 3/5
Life - 10/5! I put 105k on the set, and still had plenty of tread!

I'll be putting a set on the Tremor when the Grabbers have worn out their welcome.

I loved them, I had them on 2014 Land Cruiser. Quiet, great traction, cosmetics were spot on. Problem is the 295/70 is back ordered for the foreseeable future. Plan is purchase them once they become available. Just hope I can hold out that long.
