What's new

Banks Rear Differential Cover

She’s installed. Would have taken 1/2 as long if I had a proper lift, creepers make things so Inconvenient.

Gear oil was in a better state than I thought I would be in, but atleast now I have a self-serviceable cover for the future. Also looks great.

Have not yet attempted to install the RCI differential skid plate. Will try later.
As with all diff oil, I’m sure it was stinky.🫢

Ordered the parts from Summit. Appreciate the help everyone. I'm going to reuse the hardware that comes on the truck as the Ford dealer in town recommended that. He said Ford built those for maintenance so they are strong and will definitely work. Some blue locktite and good to go he said.

Went with both the gasket and the Spicer. Now I wait to see how ugly the tariffs are on the Canadian side. I always buy American first and if I can't, then I buy whatever else.

You guys go with Ford for fluid or Amsoil? Thinking about Amsoil since I already have an account and everything I've used from them has been great.

I ended up using Permatex copper anti-seize instead of Locktite. The last thing you want is for water to get trapped inside those bolt holes and have the bolt fix itself inside the housing. That would suck ass. 30-35 lb-ft of torque is more than enough to keep those in even under extreme vibration. I'm also pretty sure there is locktite already on those bolts from factory.

I would avoid the Motorcraft 75w-85 hypoid gear oil, it's far more expensive than Amsoil or Mobil-1.

The mobil-1 is the cheapest: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-...LS-75W-90-1-Quart/110167556?classType=REGULAR

Amsoil isn't terribly expensive but it's going to be more exclusive (Can only buy in some places), especially in Canada. If you already have an account and can get it reasonably, go for amsoil, otherwise save some money and get the Mobil-1.

You will need almost exactly 3 qts if you fill to the bottom fill hole. Doesn't hurt to have some extra too.

That's a good point for using anti-seize. I'll be on the lower as I don't have a lift on the truck. Appreciate the torque spec as well.

If the tariffs were included in the international shipping I paid for from Summit, they have good prices even with the exchange. Their save $5 for ordering through the app was unexpected but welcome.

I don't remember the exact torque spec, it's in that range, just make sure you do that research when you get to that point.

33 ft lbs pounds as per Ford dealer service manual

I installed a Spelab Cast AL with a LubeLocker gasket. Ended up taking 3 quarts of new lube with stock Tremor tires. The window and the factory fill were accurate for my truck. We went ahead and dropped the spare tire, and plenty of headroom to work once it was removed. Used a steel brush attached to a drill to clean up the mating surface. Happy with the cover and gasket! It was nice not dealing with sealant. Went ahead and used thick zip ties and moved the insulated lines at the top of the diff to other locations. If you can change your oil you can do this job! I like having easy access to drain and fill and ~1 additional quart of oil with the upgrade. You do need a torque wrench and lock tight on the bolts! Cheers!
