You are correct and I'm mistaken. On approach, the taillights illuminate and I hear a click, but the door lock plunger is still down and doesn't unlock until I put fingers behind handle. Not really sure of the intent of this approach feature?

With the lights coming on while approaching the vehicle, I can see how this can be a safety / security feature at night.
