Drive Modes for Best Gas Mileage?

For everyone that has swapped out out the stock tires for something bigger, did you get around to doing the updates to the tire size with forscan? I went up to a 34.8 (285/75/18), but have not got around to the update yet...its been 15k miles since I put on the new tires. Its not a massive change, but I would imagine over the course of thousands of miles it adds up. The lower ODO reading will be great for resale though haha

I updated mine in ForScan (GPS Method) and the speedo is 0.5 MPH off to the slower side and the Lie-0-Meter is close enough not to worry about hand calculating anymore. But I was 11% off with the 37’s so I saw a big difference.

Obviously one would think that the Eco mode would provide best fuel economy. I haven’t tried it long enough to know.

I know that with our fleet of dump trucks, the trucks with larger, more powerful engine (Mack MP8) vs the MP7, and same gear ratios, routes, and load capacity… the larger engines get better fuel economy on a 16 truck, 1.5m miles annually sample size. So I’m wondering if turning down the performance with eco actually works given my experience with my big trucks.

Just curious if anyone has any good data for which mode provides the best economy? (Probably between Eco and Normal)
Just try and stay out of boost, whatever that means for you in a given scenario, and that will help.

I'm tickled shitless with the Tremor...my 3400lb NA 6cyl gets 14mpg highway in normal mode lol. Tremor pulls about 16-17.5 putzing around in normal on 93. Not really what some would call city and not really highway either...was horrible for the first tank or two though.

Eco feels best on highway - the shifts arent as much of a pain in the ass and the decreased throttle response helps the foot not get tired/fine adjustments available. Normal, as mentioned, seems to have it's shit together on gear selection so works best for me around town. I half wish Eco was just the trans behavior of Normal with the throttle of Eco. Haven't quite figured out Sport/getting it to lift shift after a pull instead of engine braking...makes me wish I had paddles. Haven't had an auto since the AOD with a shift kit in my old ranger though.
There’s the ability to manually shift on the shift knob.

It actually makes sense for the trans to not shift upon lift. Sport (theoretically) should always keep the vehicle in the ideal gear+rpm for power. If you’re lifting mid turn to settle the vehicle, you don’t want it to upshift out of the powerband simply because you lifted…because when you go to accelerate again, it would have to downshift to put you back where you started.

Yeah I'm good with it not doing it immediately, just seems a little delayed to me. I'd expect light pedal input to hold the gear and no pedal input (full throttle lift and no brake) would trigger a shift with minimal wait - just feels weird. How dare a truck acts like a truck and not a sports car I know. Unsure if the Supra has a different TCU tuune but my wife has a 440i with the B58/8spd and, in sport mode, it seems a bit closer to what I would expect from an auto in a highway roll kinda scenario.

Boost braking under 30 freaks out the Tremor btw 😅

On my 2023 with 800 miles I am 17.5 life to date, but since I started driving it, I am at 18.5 and I do lots of short city trips. I love the ecoboost. It has come a long way since I test drove one in 2018.

I'll throw my numbers in here as well. 2023 5.0 stock, I run it in Eco a lot with probably 1/3 city and 2/3rds highway I have a lifetime average of just over 18mpg at 12k miles. I can get over 20mpg pretty consistently if I keep the truck under 70mph. Once it's at or over 70mph I generally hover right at or below 18mpg according to the dash. I agree that the adaptive cruise is not the best for mpg, especially if there's a lot of elevation changes. Drive from VA to WV on mainly back roads (speed limits around 50-55pmh) I got my best average of nearly 22mpg really trying for top mpg. I noticed like with any vehicle with a lot of tire, that keeping even slightly below spec tire pressure can drop the mpg considerably. It is extremely satisfying filling up on a highway trip while the mpg is over 20 and a full tank shows a range deep into the 700 mile range with the 36 gallon tank.

I know youve got the 5.0 but i found the same. If i stay around 65 I can get 22 mph. Over 70 and it is around 19

I have seen slightly over 23mpg on mine, but that was driving through Iowa (flat), no wind, 60-65mph speed limits, and NON-ETHANOL gasoline, which I think adds around 5% to the mileage.

Normally, I average in the 16 - 17 range with daily driving. Where I live, the Interstate speed limit is 80 mph so that really takes a toll on mileage, often dropping it into the 15's. I also run 87 octane E10 gas. It would be better if I ran 91 octane non-ethanol, which is what we run in our Explorer with the 3.5 Ecoboost.

17.5 on mine, in town and highway, 3100K on the clock.
I'm not gonna worry about it too much, it's a truck.
