drive modes

Is there any consistency or rhyme or reason the finding the drive mode I want fast ? I mostly want sport or tow/haul...but it seems no matter which way I rotate it trys to go to slippery and then off road and shifts into 4wd..then if I am moving its hard to get it to 2wd quickly;;a real PIA ccompared to a good old floor shifter !

It’s the number of detents you go through. Sport is 4 to the left for me and it works every time.
