What's new

Let's talk Caps for the bed

I can't believe I'm even thinking about one of these old man add-ons. But I recently put in the decked drawer system and now I got no place to put a cooler and the family luggage for a road trip!

I want it to look great and be simple. I don't need a bunch of fancy stuff- a painted to match quality shell that can keep my stuff secure.
RSI Smartcap (if you can afford it, or rather, if you can find one / wait to get your hands on one).

I ended up buying a BAKflip LXP (Mx4 but Line-X’d) for just over $1000 while I wait for my smart cap.

With the numerous control modules these days is there anything special I should know about installing the 3rd brake light of my new SmartCap before the installers start splicing wires? Install date is around 12 Feb.

RSI Smart Cap. Stainless steel, great weight capacity. It's a bit more expensive, possibly, but not that much more. I don't know about paint matching though...

Installing 3rd brake light is fairly easy with no need to splice wires (at least not on mine)- just plug their module in and route the wires to the cap. I didn't have to do any splicing.

Thanks for the follow up! Getting excited now.
Does anyone have the GFC Topper by Go Fast Campers?
saw them at Overland East this year and in the wild numerous times while camping in NM and CO. They look like a great top too but several points on the SmartCap favored my use case. Either is a great choice IMHO. Running a Leer wannabe on my 2014 and the most significant issues were flimsy lock on a glass window and no side access!

This is my Stone Gray with a ARE CX Revo with pop out windows. I actually like toppers. Never understood the whole "old man" look, but I'm 50. So I guess if I'm old, I'm old. Wasn't too big on the RSI smartcap as I feel they look blocky and don't really go with the truck. Plus, the side windows are kind of a gimmick. I get they have little kitchens and what not, but there is no way you are reaching in the side windows to grab something out of the bed itself unless you're over 6ft2" or have some kind of a step stool. I'm 5'11" and even reaching over the side of the bed to grab something out of the bed before my topper was hard. I'll just go thru the back or pack accordingly if I need access to something from the tailgate. Or....may invest in a Decked system.

Yeah, I didn't get the side windows on the SmartCap. Seemed pointless for my needs and an extra weakness in the security and water resistance. Maybe if you have dogs...

The Decked system is nice to have.
