Mis-fire or trans issue. Shuddering.

Well documented issue on the 10 speed. My current '17 does it. Ford had a TSB to address the cam phaser issues through a PCM programming update, and when that first came out in Apr '21 it caused lots of people to have the "trans shudder" issue. Essentially what was happening there (and here) is that the truck is not downshifting when you apply throttle as it should, and then lugging the engine which is what is causing the shudder. Solutions are to either drive in Sport mode, step on the throttle harder in order to make the truck downshift, manually downshift (or lock out the higher gears to begin with), or do a transmission tune. All work arounds to what the actual solution should be, but I am yet to see an actual solution from Ford. Seems they try to get as much mpg out of the trucks as possible so they program them to run in high gears and therefore low rpms which leads to the shudder. When I notice that the truck is running at 1200 rpms or so I lock out that gear and make the truck run in a lower gear so that I am above 1500 and that seems to help.

Just an update, I got the transmission control module re-flashed for the recall and the shudder is gone. I’ve only got ~100 miles on it and apparently it takes about 500 for the trans to relearn itself but so far so good!

@b-real You've already had same recall performed as @Cheif2Slo ?

Just throwing this in to this thread guys, I copied it out of the other F150 forum i'm on. I have been chasing a light throttle tip in shudder since new., I'm at 7K miles now. In my case I don't think it's the trans, I have done some mode 6 tests over the last few months with forscan and have seen misfires here and there. So I decided to swap my coil packs as I got them all reasonably priced on Rock Auto (DG-584) Also wanted to note that I noticed running premium gas almost eliminated the problem I have found over the last few months......but i'm back to 87 now.

Anyways I did this yesterday and here is my post to the other forum, I still don't have anymore seat time since yesterday but I'm hoping this is a coil issue:
******************************************************
Alright all, I have finally changed out all my coil packs this AM (it really only took 15min) I put a thin coat of dielectric grease inside the end of the boot on each coil (maybe an inch up the boot inside but not all the way to the spring or contact point on the spark plug)

I made sure to really seat the coils into the motor in an effort to make sure the spring is contacting the spark plug, this brings up a good point/question......I wonder if some of the problems are that the plug is not all the way in contact with the spring inside the boot. From what I can tell it's not the same old school way where it clips on to the spark plug, it appears to just maybe contact the spark plug? Anyways I am wondering if there is loss of connectivity with this setup or not, but either way I pushed the new coils in as far as possible. I also put a thin coat of dielectric grease on the outside of the coil plug in (where the harness plugs in)

I am not convinced that the original coils were completely seated down to the plug considering it seemed to take more effort than others to remove the coils (but that may not be true)

So the good news is, the truck seems to run smoother and the limited 5 mile drive i DID NOT FEEL THE SHUDDER on light pedal tip in. So I will report back, lets hope this helps us out and maybe just a reseat of the coils could help everyone (just speculating)

Also ran my Forscan and I had ZERO Misfires for the drive, so I'm really crossing my fingers. I am and have been running 87 octane now for the last tank full or two.

So all, I guess I'm hoping this has fixed the issue but not getting my hopes up, I'll report back after some more drivetime ASAP!

How do I check for misfires with Forscan?

I'll check what version I have, I updated to the newest version and I couldn't do it anymore. But I was able to go back to the previous version. I can't remember the buttons but I'll try to get you the instructions. It's called "mode 6" tests. I think you could google mode 6 tests as well.

Did your shudder ever come back or is it still smooth?

I was just thinking about the forum and checking in again. The truck is driving so much better after the battery situation. (at 15k now) I truly belive that ford did an update that turns on boost a bit faster to alleviate the shudder. I'm very happy with how it's been driving lately I don't really notice any shudder (I might just be lucky I don't know) but I still recommend pulling the cables for a bit and reconnecting. It's really helped for me to accidentally kill my battery that time. I'll look through the posts to see any updates I may have missed.

I should’ve posted this months ago, but have been so busy with work I just forgot to give my experience. Since getting the truck at the end of 2021 I would notice that the truck would shudder under certain conditions. At first I thought it was random, but then noticed that it was definitely associated with warmer engine temp and ambient temps, idling for longer periods, stuck in traffic (Atlanta hell traffic), and worsens with the A/C. For the longest time it would just be intermittent and seemed to self resolve. Then it would happen sporadically while going highway speeds. It wouldn’t throw codes, but it would send it into
Limp mode which would miraculously resolve at next start up. After a couple fuel cleaners and tanks of 93 as well as GDI cleaner it seemed to improve, but I would still detect a misfire or shudder that would last less than 30 seconds and then resolve.

One weekend after a 5 hour road trip out to Hilton head and then a 5 hour trip back a few days later with constant AC use in 100+ degree temps it finally became much more apparent what the issue was as it started shuddering severe misfiring on the way home. This time it actually did throw a code and I was able to read it in real time as I brought my OBD2 scanner and had my app on my phone going. It kept giving misfire codes for cylinder 4. I went straight to Ford and bought a new coil and plug after they told me it would take them 3-4 weeks with the truck to diagnose the issue and correct it(bullshit BTW). All of the symptoms that were previously intermittent never came back and it’s been basically rock solid since even with intercooler upgrade and new hot and cold pipes along with an overboard TB. I’m settled on the idea that this was a poorly manufactured coil with heat soak issues that likely would have been a challenge for Ford to diagnose without a full warmup and diagnostic log as the coil may actually OHM out as good when cold. Food for thought for many of those that may still be dealing with these issues.

Also, I notice that some of the engines have the flat copper washer plugs and other have the tapered seat, but you need to specify you VIN or pull the plug as ford themselves gave me the incorrect spark plug the first time I went there.

Any other recent dealership experiences with the highway acceleration shudder? My '24 has it pretty bad. Push the gas enough to drop down to 8th gear and everything shakes. Just waiting to go to the dealer for the first oil change but was curious if there's been any further news on this. I've seen the long thread on the other forum. Clearly the same thing that's happening.

Great info sir, glad you were able to get a resolution to your shudder!!
