Bed Rack + Tonneau Cover

I am not a big fan of the way the Xtrusion rack looks. It reminded me of an erector set or unistrut. But I stumbled across an Xtrusion group on FB. They are taking the "erector set" and building all kinds of cool features for their racks. I kinda like the idea of it. Here are just a few samples of what people are doing. They have brackets that work with the Retrax covers.

I joined that group as well. Pretty cool and I don’t mind the look. It’s cool how easy it is to mod and add on to.

Once my truck shows shipped I will have to make a decision and start ordering stuff. I think this idea is super cool. Kinda thinking about powder coating all the small brackets and handles Tremor Orange. Still thinking about the Smart Cap and Uptop bed rack.

That would be very cool accenting.

Anyone install cross bars with BAK X4S roll cover? I emailed this Billie Bar company that is all over instagram and they said the bracket and bars should fit..
Anyone ever do the BakX4S? I have a bakbox from my old truck and would like to keep it but also want to roof rack on the tonneau

I bought the Bak X4S and was supposed to get my truck by 5/19 but it’s sitting in the rail yard waiting delivery to the dealership. Once I get the truck and cover installed I’ll post some pictures. I’m interested in the Billie bars too but want to do a few other things to the truck before I buy them or something similar

FYI I contacted Billie bars and they said they do not suggest the x4s with their system-said it’s just too tight a fit.

I've been eyeing Overland Systems Freedom Rack: keys features adjustable height, adjustable length, can quickly remove rear crossbar to use your bed for tall stuff/easier access. It's a universal fit too, no drill fit option is standard, up to you if you want to permanently attach.

Seems ideal for situations like OPs where you really want your truck in the garage but also want to haul toys that need some head room over the cab.

Finally got a Tremor, tried getting Mountain Top to verify if their track system would work with a bed rack and hold more than 165lbs. No response from them. I really liked their design with the cover above the rails. My fridge may not make it under the Retrax. Plus their drainage system and quick access can are a great idea. Ended up going with the PowerTrax Retrax, just to find it back ordered like everything else I have ordered.

Has anyone on here actually install a bed rack on the Retrax yet? Not the luggage rails, but the real rack.

I wish these companies would get their stories straight. When I contacted them they said .. yes it fits with no issue just add some extra foam for a gasket

I have seen really good setups. Wondering if anyone has experience with the Front Runner Slimline II with the Retrax XR 6.5' tonneau cover.

I’ll probably end up doing this. Picture from the Facebook group

Stuff is hidden and easy to load kayaks.

I've done a ton of research, if you're going to use this for kayaks and lighter things up top this is a great setup (expensive but does what you need off the shelf). Also if you wanted a retractable cover anyway it's a solid option.

i wouldnt advise putting a rooftop tent up there though, those t-slot rails from retrax (and similair competitors) are not sturdy enough to take anything heavy off-road. Onroad might be fine.

Edit: personally im now considering just buying a trailer to haul my kayaks around. costs about the same as a rooftop solution and easier to get them in and out of the water. Thoug it does look cooler to put them on top.

I won’t be using a RTT. We have an Opus 4 when it is full family camping and using a tent if it is just me and the kids. I’ve also been hoarding my REI dividend so the rack should be “free”.

Need something to protect and secure the gear in the bed so a retractable solution or a hard top we’re the option. Wife hates caps as the automatically make it a “grandpas car”. Lol

Thisl set up will also allow me to install cross bars below the boat rack and set up my gear basket for firewood and wet stuff.

Still looking at other options, but more and more settling on this combination.

I really love your setup.
I went to Rhino Rack and they dont list any products for Ford. I am trying to find crossbars that will work BAK industries X4 .. but so far I have no found anything. Anyone use crossbars with the X4 roll cover?

I've been looking into the same thing, seems like 'truxedo elevate ts rails' will work. There are some YouTube videos out there. I have not tested, but I doubt it is strong enough for a rooftop tent if you're offroading. Should be fine for kayaks.

Sounds like you're all set, and I like the idea of lower crossbars for a basket type storage. I see so many YouTubers with RTT on these things. Definitely not safe.

I have considered the retrax + Yakima overhaul HD as well as diamondback HD + Yakima overhaul HD combos. Benefits and downsides to both. Retrax offers easier entry, diamondback stronger and can hold more weight (can safely support a roof top tent or 4 wheeler ). Retrax + leitner rack also a great combo, but not height adjustable like the Yakima.

The reality is I use the truck mostly for trips to home depot/Costco with camping/kayaking as a weekend activity. So for me not going the RTT path.

I think I’m leaning towards diamondback cover due to the poor upbringing/low moral character of people in my neighborhood.

Is there a rack (cab high or close) that would allow a mx4 bakflip to open and close? Seems to me that a bedrail mounted rack should accomplish this, but I have been told by xtrusuin and max-modular that it will work with this tonneau but not allow open and close.

I am expecting my truck by years end (Nov 7 build date) and just trying to get my build statred.
