Ford Performance Tune

Another data point, service manager today actually recommended it... I said well doesn't that void my ESP... he said as long as it's installed by a authorized Ford tech there is no impact to your warranty....

I mostly agree, and I think it would be WILD for Ford to sell a product with their name and blessing, then say it also caused damage they won't cover under the vehicles ESP... and the letter of the law says they must PROVE a modification caused the damage...

Willing to bet if you showed them a please come to court paper they'd back off, but the service manager really gave the impression this just ain't gonna happen. He has the tune on hisown Bronco.
Exactly. The logic doesn’t work in Ford’s favor. We also give up hp and tq for a “safer” tune but we have the mother ship’s endorsement. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Iva head tune for 5k miles and zero complaints. All positive.

So my question is 2 parts. I need to get it installed by a certified tech. If I’m from California what’s the easy way to get this done? Drive out of state?

Also will it pass smog in California or do I need to put the stock program back on before I go in? Is this possible.

My understanding is it’s smog compliant.

Ford dealer, Ford techs.

So I have inquired a bit with couple local dealers. One was clueless when I mentioned Ford Performance Parts. The other had an idea but no much more. The service deportment at the first while they weren’t sure about this specific product he told me it would $300/hr labor. So looks like I will be going to a different dealer or finding a ASE mechanic. Although the latter concerns me it would be outside of the Ford network so to speak.
Would anyone have even more warranty concerns having it installed from a non dealer shop over a dealership?

Im inside my warranty. So yes. I paid the piper to keep it valid by using a Red Seal technician at. FORD Performance authorized dealer ship. It mattered. And it cost me more than it probably should

I want to do this but am pretty jaded about warranty. Only a year into owning the truck

I was too. Had it done at 4k miles. But it gets registered to your truck and with Ford when done through authorized dealer. Had zero issues. And its much better than stock, especially the calibration on the tranny. Power comes on early and torque and is much more linear. I rarely get past 3k rpm because well, no need to.

$300 is your dealer labor rate?! I paid $180 (1 hr), which I thought was on the high end, but in the ballpark (i know i know.. midwest pricing). I would have just gone to an ASE mechanic/shop, but they were the same rate and also skittish about putting their ASE cert. # on the invoice.

My dealer had a tech that had already installed the Tune on another truck, so it was a non-issue, only took 15-20 minutes total.

Just had to have my transfer case replaced under warranty at 29k keep those warranties intact!!

A dealer would have to PROVE the aftermarket part CAUSED the transfer case to fail for them to deny warranty coverage of it. Well established and it's the LAW.

I'm in Midwest as well outside of St Louis on the Illinois side. Your midwest labor is far better than mine. So yeah, sounds like time to have another dealer quote me or ASE mechanic. I just want to find someone that has a clue of what the procal tune is before I move forward. Understandable a random mechanic shop wouldn't but I would expect a Ford Dealership would.

This same dealership charging $300/hr labor quoted me nearly $700 for a 20k service which really seem to amount to an oil change and filter replacement. I thought the Chevy place right next door was more reasonable when I had my Cadillac.

$112 for install on ford site…

In reality, Ford dealer denies warranty, run it up the chain, Ford denies warranty, then you need to sue and Ford's army of lawyers and engineers can likely prove just about anything unless your truck is completely stock.

The Ford engineer is just going to say that the part was not designed to handle more power than stock. The only response most people are going to have is that other people have the same mod without a problem. The problem with that argument is that just because the part did not fail for others does not mean you got a faulty part, it could have just been at the wrong end of the tolerance stack, would have been fine without the mod but could not handle whatever additional stresses the mod caused.

Once the engineers get involved, they are going to explain things in a way that will leave you needing to prove that the mod did not cause the failure.
