Update to the saga: finally found a dealer that would honor the warranty, and once they did I financially incentivized the tranny tech to assist the process, shouldn't have to but that's life, and I'm in SFL where that's a lifestyle. They went straight to the fix at the end of the TSB. Tranny tech said it was typical of that time transmission and he knew exactly what the issue was. He knew it had a tune too, asked me about it, no worries - one had nothing to do with the other. Even tipped the guy more, they got it done in a week. Basically rebuilt the transmission including the leaking clutch packs in the drums, different metals (aluminum against cast iron) rubbing, the seals and bushings leak - that's how he explained it. Newer trannies they changed the seals. I don't know if it was the incentive, but it was a great service tech and I'd have just gone this route from the beginning had I known. Couldn't be happier with the dealer/job, won't mention them for obvious reasons.
So far so good, drives like when it was new with the transmission still adapting again. Cost me a couple grand in rental cars and Ubers, the incentive/tip to the tranny tech for doing it quickly, and I ended up buying a second car thinking it would take longer or more be ready, and I have a trip coming up I need a car for (didn't want to keep spending money on rentals).
All in all, YMMV, and Ford could care less about your warranty process and what you're entitled to. Go the correct avenue, get shafted. Grease the right dealer, get it done in a week. Even if the first dealer had honored the warranty, they'd still have made me jump through 5 steps before they replaced the drum, that's how the TSB is written. Ford is basically waiting your warranty out to not replace parts they knowingly put in hundreds of thousands of transmissions over a year and a half. Insert "every manufacturer is the same", and that very may well be true, but let me tell you, it sucks when it happens to you!
