What's new

5 star finally has a 21+ tune

I also have a SCT X4 used on 5.0 f150 that has been unused for years; can you verify a new vehicle and tunes be used with it? I thought they were locked to individual vehicles?
Ok just got off the phone with 5 Star. The tuner from your old f150 cannot be used. They look the same but the tuner has a new part number so the old one won't work. I asked about a trade up program and they said not at this time but that doesn't mean they won't do something in the future. BUMMER. I dislike the fact that I have to buy basically the same tuner again. Oh well...

I know, I found that out when I got the one for my 2014F150, my neighbor gave me a deal on it when he got a new truck. I guess I will be selling mine too. I definitely am tuning my 22 tremor !

thanks for calling and unfortunate for those of us with “older” although identical looking tuners

I think this is very much worth the effort and cost. I think there are several different kinds of tuning so find which one you’d rather have.

one type is a total software change and when you tune it that’s it now you’re motor is tuned and you can’t really change it without REPROGRAMMING it back to stock.
if you have the money and I don’t know if this is possible on newer vehicles is to have 2 computers one with the tune and one is stock. New vehicles may have several computers and then this isn’t possible

There used to be a tune where it would come with a display and you could choose different tunes by selecting the version you want- modes as it were. Like race mode will boost hp and change the transmission to shift for the quickest starts. Or there is a Tow mode, which selects that motor and transmission program. Eco and other tunes all available on your display.
i don’t know if those are still available but that’s the one I’d prefer. That way you can go back to a stock type mode to save fuel during normal use.

I had a tune like that on my 2005 duramax. But with more and more CPUs on vehicles i don’t know if that’s still possible. It had about 8 modes including MAX SMOKE which I thought was weird

It would be great if someone more in the know could list different tuners and the different advantages of each tuner
This probably should be just software only because we’d get one helluva matrix if you start including changing intercoolers turbos and fuel injectors etc

Any chance a transmission tune from Five Star DOESN'T void warranty?
You can't blanket void a warranty from doing a mod. If you do a tune and a window motor goes, it will be covered as they are unrelated. If you do a tune and damage the transmission, FORD could deny a warranty claim. With that said, they need to be able to actually prove without a doubt that whatever you modded, was the direct cause of a failure.

With my old truck, I would have to switch the tune back to factory settings about a week before my emission inspection so the flags would reset and I would pass. If I forgot to do it soon enough, I would fail the emissions test. Point being, if anything went wrong, just set it back to factory and take it in.

ended up ordering mine, went with 91 perf/tow since ill have a 6800lb travel trailer for 6 months a year
Let us know your thoughts on it after you get it please.

Will do, I had it on my 3.0 explorer ST and it was a huge difference, mind you I ran the straight performance version, the perf/tow is a little dialled back

Yeah I don’t plan to run the full performance version so I’m not too concerned with overall hp numbers. I’m more interested in how the transmission does with a new tune.

Anyone know why it says "Map5: +6psi peak, suggested for 30% E85 mixtures and/or unleaded race fuel" ? I'm sure I'm missing something, but that's like saying 50% of the time I'm right 25% of the time. :)

E85 is 85%, so they're saying you can put up to 1/3*.85 ethanol...25.5%?

They are saying that 30% of the fuel in your tank needs to be E85 which would put you at “E30”. I think you would have to upgrade injectors and possibly fuel pumps to run straight E85

You can run straight e85 in these, not really sure why you would unless running drags, but you can just get a lot less mpg.

5 Star offers an optional warranty with their tunes that will kick-in if a dealership refuses service because of the installed tune. Honestly, this seems like a no-brainer for anyone that's complained about the factory transmission and its quirks. I will 100% be ordering a tune with the 5 year warranty.

Hey guys,
I'm new to tuning. Why would I want the 5Star tune over the Livernois tune for my 21 Tremor? The look to be around the same price.
Thanks in advance!

Livernois has been tuning these for over a year, I really like their Tunes, they made a big difference in performance. The only benefit I can see with 5 Star is the warranty. I cant say enough good about the Livernois tunes.

5* tuner plugs into the ODB port under the steering wheel while the Livernois you plug into the ODB, then under the hood. I’ve ran 5* in two previous ecoboost F-150s and they have been great, reliable, fast, and customer service was great. I’m running the Livernois in my tremor now because I was way to impatient to wait for 5*. I like it, it’s fast, shifts great, seems to be very reliable, and have 0 complaints ….but if 5* had been out i probably would have gone with them just off of ease of use and my prior experience with them. No idea which is faster with this version of the ecoboost though. Hopefully that helps!

I live roughly three hours north of 5* so thinking this will be my go to option. Thanks for the insight!

looks like they are waiting on tuners to arrive to ship out and pushed shipping back to dec

estimates are around 100hp 130tq on premium (assuming thats 93) at the wheels

i just went with the 91 since 93 isnt very common here asusming that will be more like 75hp/100tq which is still smazing for just a tune
