What's new

5 star finally has a 21+ tune

the perf tow and just perf ones are going to pretty different in themselves, and not everyone wants pure 0-60 or 1/4 mile times and super sensitive throttle, fuel and elevation as well will cause variations

i had the 5 start perf on my explorer st and in town in sport mode it was too sensitive, probably gear for the track, but 0-speeding tickets all the time lol
Oh I 100% agree. I got multiple tunes for multiple use cases. Daily, I will stay in 93 perf. If I am towing something I will change to the 93 perf/tow, as I don't tow daily it will be easy for me to swap becauseI know when I will.

Even went so far as to get an e50 for later when I (might) change over and other tunes for various trips where 93 isn't available. Like most I want the transmission shift points fixed first and foremost. The fun is a cherry on top.

Yep, I’ve got multiple tunes as well 👍🏻

Does anyone have their x4 mounted? If so, any mounts better than others? I know there are a million. But wasn't sure if something worked better than the $15 Amazon ones.

Well, got the device yesterday and the tunes today. Just got done installing the 93 performance. HOLY SHIT. I expected a good bit of difference but this is a different truck.

How was the install and do you have a link to what you ordered?

Is everyone's install the same? Unplug the ECU connectors and so forth? I got my 5star X4 in today but it's just the traditional OBDII tuner, nothing that would plug into the ECU ports.

I ordered through Stage 3 Motorsports a few months ago and received an ECU adapter for the engine bay. OBD programming would be great if it's available already. Unplugging the ECU connectors each time to upload a tune revision is a pain in the ass, especially in 2023 when all my other vehicles program from my damn phone.

Well, the instructions provided are for the ECU install, but no components were provided with the tuner... looks like I have a 7015FS and a 7015PG-B is required? Not sure, the 5star website doesn't really mention the adapter for the 21+ 3.5L either, only in the instructions. I'll have to give them a call tomorrow.

Might be a silly question but what's the diff between these? I have a 2022.

I think they just updated to the OBD tuner where you now need to send in your ECU to be unlocked so that you can use the OBD port.

Meaning I think you need to send them your ECU...

RTD+ requires you to send your PCM to HPTuners for unlocking, on top of buying the device, licensing, and tunes. But you can flash via ODBII and eventually, when they have TDN support, you can use your mobile phone (Android or iPhone) to flash that way.

SCT x4 will require you to flash the PCM directly under the hood. But is good to go today.

I personally like HPTuners ecosystem better, and I have both an RTD+ and the new x4 with ECU connectors since I recently bought a 2023 5.0 tremor. Unfortunately, even though they have support for my 5.0, the strategy code doesn't open right in their tuning software, so waiting for SCT to fix it.

My 2023 5.0 Tremor is now tuned by 5 Star Tuning with SCT x4. However, my PCM was unlocked via the MG1 HPTuners service, just waiting for my strategy to become supported and I will switch over to that.

I thought one great point of 5* using hptuners was being able to use your hptuners if you had one already. But nope. Have to buy their specific one.
Shame they can just update the tune file and send it back but won’t do that.

RTD/RTD+ will work eventually, just not ready yet. And you can use another company's RTD+, you don't need their specific one.

Yeah I get that, but there’s tons of people with hpt. I have one cable and can use it on all my cars. RTD+ seems dumb to me. I don’t get the purpose

RTD works on multiple vehicles as well, it's just read/flash and datalog only. you can't use it with VCM Editor. It's effectively the same as a mpvi. Just limited on what it can do with regards to editing files.

If you had a RTD or RTD+ from another tuning company you can still buy tunes from 5 star, if it's for a licensed VIN already then you don't even need HPT credits.

I purchased this one from 5 star and received it last week. Sent in truck info/calibrations last Thursday and still awaiting tunes. Really hoping to have them for the w/e:cautious:

I finally got it installed. I'm only running the 87 tune so it's not a drastic change but definitely noticeable. My company pays for my fuel but we're only allowed to use 87 octance on the fuel cards. Catch 22. One day Ill try some 91 and use the 91 tune just to see the difference.
