Axle rust?

Yes, it has a lifetime warranty. Tomorrow I can PDF the warranty and post if you like. They did spray the axle and differential where I went.

If you are looking for complete peace of mind, LINE-X completely backs up our ValuGard services with a lifetime warranty for new vehicles. You can rustproof your vehicle in its first three months, or 3,000 miles of use.

Lol, I was at ~2900 miles.

There is also a rust inhibitor that is sprayed into the quarter panels, tailgate, doors, etc.

I could understand other trucks being sprayed with rust inhibitor on the quarter panels etc but an all aluminum body truck, it would quieten it some I guess. Which we used bedliner on our plywood shoes that we lived in when we weren't on mission, to keep shrapnel penetration down from rocket and mortar attacks. More effective than you would think.

The rust inhibitor doesn’t appear to be line-x bed spray or the valugard undercarriage spray — it’s a wax based coating that is sprayed/misted into the panel. It’s not the black undercarriage coating.

I guess any non-aluminum parts will be protected?

Valugard VG-104A Aerosol Undercoating is an easy to use, durable coating that provides rust protection for the under body of your car, truck or RV. It is wax based and remains flexible in the coldest temperatures but will not run or drip even in the hottest, and its black color gives a finished appearance to wheel wells and other visible areas. When applied in a thicker coating, it even provides sound deadening insulation.

I guess it does provide sound insulation — and now I have no idea what color the rust inhibitor is that was used in the panels.

Oh they sprayed my rear shock housing on each side — this covers up the Tremor branding (not that you can really even see the branding). However, I’m going with Fox as soon as they have a product, so no big deal I guess. Plus I understand you can remove it with mineral spirits - or the Line-X said they would remove it if I bring it by.

So if you have a no spray part in mind, you may want to mention it to them. I did make specific mention not to cover the skid plates — just didn’t think about the shocks.

Lol well guess I will keep that in mind when I take mine back for the undercoat, got the bed done 2 weeks ago, waited 2 months because they were backed up, now to get the undercoat done they said first of may.

My Line-X also wanted to keep my truck 24-hours to allow it to properly dry — The instructions say it needs an hour and a half to be dry to touch and then approximately 24 to 48 hours to finish drying. Line-X let me drive home (clear day) and I am parked in my garage for the next~48 hours. You can really smell the stuff when you go in the garage!

Stopped by my local dealer today and took a look at a 402A that they just got in... the truck was built this month (February build date) and delivered today. Has 4 miles on it and looks like this!?

Makes me cringe to think about the one that has my name on it in a parking lot somewhere waiting on a chip.

On a side note... the salesman tried to tell me that it wasn't rust. It was rail dust from the rail car... Geez...

Rail Dust. That’s fricken hilarious. Where did he dream that up? Cringeworthy.

I’m 95% convinced to go with the line x undercoating to deal with axle rust.

It was very cringe worthy… stuff like that turns me off of sales people so fast

I wonder if the salesman know how bad rail dust really is?

Rail, dust is real and almost impossible to get out of paint. The cancer just keeps spreading. He or she should never mention rail dust. They probably didn't know how bad that really is.

I’ve had good luck with a clay bar on some rail dust on a tailgate and on a rear hatch. Seemed to work really well. YMMV.

All this rust talk seems specifically targeted at the third member (rear differential, axle tubes, etc). Is there anywhere else that seems to be a problem? Frame? Crossmembers? Front differential?
If this issue seems limited to the third member then I’m planning on solving it with POR-15 slopped on with a painters mit (like painting the ol’ pipe and cable fences).
Personally I don’t want to hose down everything underneath with some goop if I don’t have too.

iron-x or similar product then clay

I had a GMC repainted twice due to massive rail dusting. Dust burnt to the sheet metal and caused little cancer spots. Tons around the windshield frame, roof and hood. Never seen anything like it before. GM covered the first paint job and it came back. Paint place took it in the shorts the second time. My Alumiduty has slight rail dusting on the tailgate and rear quarter panels. Clay bared and use a CG iron remover. Looks like it goes away, but after a few months the little orange spots come back. No bubbles yet and it's 3 years old now. Both trucks where white and it seems to show more. I am with you on the POR-15, its good stuff. And I do know what you mean with he paint mitt and fence. I use to build pipe fence with and without cables in the summer for college money. We would build them out of old drill stem from oil rigs. Good times.

I did POR-15 with an old brush. It will drip so watch out for that. But it looks very nice now. 30 bucks and an hour of work, not too bad. I only hit the rear axle/diff/etc. I had no other rust.

I digress. Rail dust is a thing? So the salesman wasn’t a complete idiot.

Yes, its super heated particals of metal from the rail and wheels of the train. They are hot enough to burn into the paint and end up showing as speckles of rust. In the case of my GM they actually burnt to the sheet metal and welded to it. Some its just minor, not sure why its so random. Bad wheel on a freight car maybe.
