What's new

What do you do in your spare time other than plan on a Tremor?

Wait, there is spare time? Well, if you guys have spare time, help me decide if I can be happy with

If that’s what you end up with let me know what you think of it. Most of my hunting shots are around that 2-300 yard mark as well, but I love shooting steel at 600-1,000.
It'll likely be awhile. Getting ready to break ground on a new house, so although my better half has given me the green light on an optic and suppressor for it, I'm waiting to see if it eats into my bar/shop budget. haha.

OSS having a sale on 7.62 suppressors right now is trying my nerves though.... haha

My next long range setup will most likely have a suppressor. I have yet to get one but it’s been on my list a while. The hoops and the wait time have somewhat discouraged my interest in the past.

I suppress pretty much everything, be careful, it becomes an addiction. Completely changes the shooting experience from sound to recoil reduction. (Doesn't really reduce the recoil, but spreads it out over a longer period of time.) The process isn't really that hard, you just have to make yourself not think about it while waiting. My shortest wait was 6 months and my longest was a year.

Soooo, about like waiting on a Tremor? Haha

Still waiting on my Sandman S. 10 months and aging. I did finally go in 2 weeks ago to fit it to a couple of pew pews. Funny enough, 1 shim kit=3 sticks fitted.

Just got back from my first range trip with the Tremor:

We mainly shot at 100 Yards — I was helping a friend get his AR sighted in. He may a bigger issues as the new bolt he bought isn’t cycling great — my Colt BCG seemed to work alright in his rifle though… Really strange.

Anyway — here is the 100 Yard M4 w/ ACOG and M16A4 w/ VCOG Clones target:

And here is the AK47 with a Pioneer Arms x2 scope:

Not sure I can tighten up the AK — may be the nature of the beast.

There’s always more scope adjusting, but at a certain point I feel I’m just not getting anywhere due to the ammo, rifle and shooter lol.

One other thing that’s kinda neat and something I didn’t know. I started wearing glasses in my late 30’s. Anyway, I never thought to try shooting without corrective lenses - it turns out I can see fine through an optic. I shoot with irons most of the time so it never occurred to me to try without glasses…

Looks like a good day! I doubt there’s much to be done with that AK, except maybe just keep trying different loads. That being said, if you do that, make sure to clean the barrel between each one. Pretty crazy how much the different kinds of powder being in the barrel can mess with your real results.

Interesting observation with shooting with glasses. I wore glasses from 5 years old until about 7 years ago when I got eye surgery. I don’t recall ever trying to shoot without them, but my vision was terrible. That’s pretty interesting though.

I am nearsighted, so that may have something to do with it —the image may actually be closer after going through the scope lenses is all I can think of (the focal point changed). I can also see fine out of the spotting scope. However, when I look through the back window in my house across the field, everything is a blur at distance. I wonder if using a mirror to look across the field will be clear like when using the scope? It may all be on where the focal point is — up close on a scope or mirror vs. at distance through a window. So a 1X optic with a distant focal point would be blury for me vs. a scope of 2X or more which would be clear and crisp.

The Trigicon VCOG I have is adjustable between 1 to 8 power — I wonder if the 1X will be blury, or will it be clear as the image is still being reflected off lenses?

Regardless, I am ditching the corrective lens when using my scopes from now on — sure, sure I still use safety glasses, don’t we all? I don’t remember being issued safety glasses in the USMC in the 1990s — maybe that’s all changed…

I can’t say for sure, but I’m guessing that looking through the scope on any power should seem more crisp due to the corrective properties in the scope like the diopter adjustment. If you have that set correctly for your eye I’m guessing 1x will look as crisp as 8x. It would be an interesting thing to check out.

Nice man! Sounds like a great day.

For your buddies AR, I would try a different buffer and/or spring. Be careful with switching BCGs on the fly. While most times the headspacing works out, you could get into a situation where tolerance stack doesn't add up in your favor and you might not get full lockup of the lugs. You could check with a gage. Headspacing and warranty is why I usually buy fully assembled uppers from the factory rather than building my own. Could also be gas rings or a loose carrier key. Also assuming he doesn't have an adjustable gas block.

AK's have notoriously bad barrels. Often just re-crowning the muzzle can make a huge difference. One of my buddies that I went to gunsmithing school with now makes a ton of custom AK parts and accurizes AKs for customers. You can get them shooting just as well as ARs with a little tuning.

And you are right about ammo. When I'm breaking in a rifle I like to buy a variety of different ammo types and even weights. The length of the barrel, twist rate of the barrel, how long the bullets are (often confused with weight) and where the bullet is seated in the chamber will affect the performance of the bullet. I've also seen bedding a receiver and free floating a barrel change 2" groups to sub-MOA.

That’s what the hammer and forward assist is for. LOL

We went down the road of the gas rings on his original bolt. He bought a new BCG in hopes of solving the problem. His rifle is 80’s vintage, so no warranty to contend with. I wasn’t too concerned about my Colt BCG — its all spec, what can go wrong ;). Turned out to work well….He’s going to take it into a gunsmith to work it out.

Right now I am using IMI 5.56 M193 and Tula 7.62X39. I have plenty of 7.62 and Midway seems to have an endless supply of IMI 5.56. I don’t think I will get sub 2” MOA on the ARs with the current ammo — don’t even think about the AK LOL!

For what it’s worth, I’ve had good results from Hornady Superformance with the 53 gr Vmax in my AR. It’s a bull barrel DPMS with a Timney trigger. I got lucky and ended up with a unicorn AR that shoots exceptional. Had a buddy who bought it to hunt coyotes with and he really hated packing it around and much preferred his bolt gun. I’ll bet if you try a few different bullet weights of some higher end ammunition you can get that gun to MOA or very close.

Before paying a gunsmith, I really recommend he try a different weight buffer and/or spring if some other rifles are available to swap with. I've literally handed over my buffer and spring to someone at the range and it solved all of their cycling issues.

A lot of mil-spec rifles barrel twist rates are tuned for the longer bullet on the M855 (62 gr.) cartridge. Don't be surprised when the shorter 55 gr bullet in the M193 cartridge doesn't perform well. The twist rate on my 10.5" barrel is aggressive to make up for the loss in length. It likes the heavier stuff the mostly, it spins the lighter stuff too much throwing it off.

My guess is it's a longer barrel with a slower twist rate. 1:9?

I run the superperfromance in my .308 bolt action and love them! It makes up for some of my performance loss on my shorter barrel (roughly 25 fps per inch). I run the 150 gr. because I chopped the barrel to 20" and too slow of a twist rate for the 170 gr stuff. In hindsight, I wish I had gone with a faster twist rate, but it was the first gun I built, so lessons learned.

Yes sir, Bull 20 with 1/9 twist. A 20” 308 sure would be handy to pack around. I made some decisions on my first build that I would like to change myself but now I have a solid plan for the next go at it. Haven’t been too motivated to do it yet with how hard everything has been to get a hold of. I’ve been eyeing some Swaro Bins for a few years that I should get first. Can’t decide which ones to get. The hunting world is an expensive hobby.

I went 16" on my AR10. I figure it's a good length for adding a suppressor to without getting too long. I'm building it to be a < 500yrd rifle.
