What's new

Interesting thread on intercooler.

Ok, so I've been thinking about doing these for a while anyway and I'm just going to pull the trigger. Ordered the bov last night during research and narrowing down intercoolers...Figured y'all might want my list. I have not included any high mount kits.

(HAS FLATS ON TOP AND BOTTOM CAST ENDS FOR FUTURE WATER/METHANOL INJECTION AND DRAIN HOLE DRILLING)

AMS: https://www.amsperformance.com/product/ams-2-7l-and-3-5l-ecoboost-f150-raptor-intercooler-kit/
(THE ENDS OF THIS ARE WELDED NOT CAST AND IT RELOCATES THE BOV TO THE BOTTOM - no longer a top choice for me)

CVF: https://www.cvfab.com/products/cvf-...-f-150-2-7l-3-5l-raptor-ecoboost?ref=ouGJl8mV
(CHEAPEST AND MAYBE BIGGEST? NOT SURE ON THAT AS SOME DON'T GIVE DIMENSIONS)

TURBOSMART:

Also worth noting, during my research I came across a lot of log data for our intercooler vents. Apparently they are closed almost 99% of our driving time, only exception is spirited acceleration after which it closes immediately. There is data suggesting that removing or opening them gives massive increases in performance, but towing and really hot climates will not really benefit as much. Just an FYI.

REMOVAL OF THE VENTS DOES THROW A BACKGROUND CODE BUT NOT A CEL

ALL INTERCOOLERS WILL REQUIRE THE VENT SHROUD BE REMOVED

So with the intake air being so much cooler/denser does the engine need a tune or does it have enough smarts to compensate automagically?

The last part lol.

Tunes are always better but these parts do not require one. Our trucks have sensors that do all of that, that goes for CAI's too.

Great write up.

I was between the AMS and the Cobb, but I think I'm going to go with the Cobb just off brand reputation and it looks to be a better finished/higher quality product. I like the black also.

Will be going with the BOV off american trucks.

Let us know what you decide!

I really like the CVF because the reviews are all fantastic and it's the biggest. It comes in black like the COBB too.

The Whipple has an oil drain built into the bottom of it, which is super nice. Most people drill a tiny hole in the stock intercooler to do this.

The older Mishimoto is black and has a white "M" logo that looks sick with the vents off, so as far as aesthetically that's my favorite (pic below). This will be void when I change bumper though...

Again, I like HP and that is an end goal for me and methanol injection/E50/E85 options would be nice.

I’m going to unplug mine and stick them open and see what my butt dyno thinks. Not the first time I’ve read this and would eliminate my desire for spending on a new one if it’s even 50%as good as going aftermarket

Looking forward to your performance feedback!

Another boost newbie question: would an aftermarket filter (I refuse to call them cold air intakes even though I know it’s used as a catch all term lol) function synergistically with better intercooling like I imagine? As in hp gains greater than the sum of each mod alone?

I know they 💯 work better together.
If you are asking does a cai that claims 8hp and an exhaust that claims 15hp which equals a total of 23hp separately possibly provide even higher hp gains together like maybe 28hp together.

I’m not sure if they will dyno higher but they are complementary mods to each other. You will get better air flow performance by having both done. I’m no pro, I’m sure someone else in here can provide a much more technical answer.

More technical would go over my head anyway 😂

Short answer = yes.

If you want more info on why, start looking into back pressure, turbo spool times, and things like that. I'm new to trucks/off road stuff but performance is my wheelhouse. I had a 750+ hp Honda civic with a turbo B18c1 I built (Turbos are life). All these things work best together. You will not get the real numbers they claim without a tune, but put them together and get a real good tune and you will usually get more. Cat back exhaust is almost negligible, downpipes and manifolds are where you make your money with turbos.

More air in means more vroom....but you gotta get it out just as quickly.

I was trying to ignore this thread on purpose. It kept looking at me and popping up. Told myself don't you read it. I did. Dam you forums.
That was the intent to return the favor, you guys have done to me over and over.

I absolutely will not look into any of that due to fear of opening pandora's box.

I grew up lusting after 1000hp Supras stuck in 12 second hell (RACE ME FROM A ROLL BRO) and watching my retard friends blow up their turbo DSMs in any number of ways. The danger now is that I have the money to indulge any potential warranty-voiding urges.

Warranties used to be good though, now they're a joke. After 36k miles, do whatever you want.

Waiting to tune mine until then, getting all the Boltons in the meantime.

I bought a 7 year/100k extended warranty that I'm giving serious thought to cancelling and putting that prorated refund into a BPU-esque set of mods.

Does a 21+ ecoboost true tuning option exist yet? As far as I can tell the livernois tuner is vaporware and the BMS JB4 is a piggyback that just hijacks/spoofs the MAP sensor signal.

Ummm perhaps I don't understand what you mean....vaporware, generally speaking, is something that is said to be made but isn't actually made. Livernois is indeed real. It's actually a pretty good tune from my understanding without going to a shop and having it custom done. It can also be mapped back to stock if needed with the same software. Also, it is undetectable if done correctly so no voided warranty lol

Ford actually works with them a good bit and has allowed them access to a lot that makes theirs stand out compared to other generic tunes. In my research, this is the best we can get so far and probably the best you'll get without going to and working with a specialized shop.

This is correct and from all that I have seen is the only company that Ford has allowed to crack their system to do these tunes.
