What's new

Catalytic Convertor protection

I did the Talon skid. It’s a pain in the ass to install to say the least.

Looks good now that its in place.

I'm installing the skid plate now, started yesterday

Getting the drivers rear side bolts tightened is NO JOKE

Also, found that I had to keep the plate a little lower as the nuts on the front frame and skid plate would hit each other if trying to make it too high.

This is exactly what I ran into as well. I did end up lowering my front brackets more than I would have to avoid the conflict as well.

For the driver side rear bolts. . I was able to reach my hand in to place the nuts by having the the front of the plate hang towards the ground and reaching my arm in along it inside the frame. I pushed the skit into place with my knee and got those 2 bolts threaded on before doing any other bolts. Then got all the other bolts hand tight. Then it was pretty easy to get a 19mm wrench on the driver read to fully tighten with all of the bolts installed.

I found the hex bolts a bit soft they heads were already deforming just from tightening. Definitely would not tightening them until you are sure you are done, because I worry you are not getting those out very easy.

So the optimal setup from what I gather is the talon transmission/cats skid as it protects the cats as well, with the RCI gas tank skid (I don't see that talon makes one of these). That, with the stock engine skid, will provide full protection from damage and theft as far as I can tell.

Thats what I did. Then all the skids are metal. No experience with that raptor skid but it seems like a decent option as well

I just installed the Talon one.. it definitely was a pain in the buttocks! Reading all the comments from those installing, I can relate to all of them.. definitely seems worth it, though.
Unfortunately, while I was under there I saw what looked like someone tried to use a jack on the mid crossbar (corrent term?). It was pushed/dented up on the edge. It obviously wasn't me, the point of contact had some rust. The only time it was at the dealer was when they checked the driveshaft insulation.. I'm wondering if some noob tried to jack it up instead of putting it on the lift..

There is a guy on Etsy by the name of carhart customs that makes a steel skid plate that covers the cats. $300.

That's awesome. Do you know if it fits on the Tremor with the front skid plate already installed?

I don't have my truck yet to look and compare photos to see if his fits further back / would work.

Seeing how the OEM Ford Raptor part fits and works and less than $200 with the oil removal door and bolts - why would this not be the best option for a Cat theft deterrent ? I don't plan on offroading with the truck but boy would it mess up a vacation if you come out of your hotel room to find you no longer have a catalytic converter.. that would suck
Anyway any reason to not go with the Raptor offering ?

which raptor offering are you referring too? I'm not familiar with that one

The one posted in post #54 through 60 of this thread (page3)
Thanks! That was a stupid question… sorry!

I subscribe to this thread but just missed those posts I guess!

That looks like a great option!

Another option is the Raptor OEM steel skid plate. Still working on the oil drain cover (I ordered the wrong PN the first time). I will update with that part number once I confirm.

Skid Plate: HL3Z-7222-C
Bolt (qty 4): W716831-S439
Nut (qty 2): W719490-S439

This covers the same as the cardboard cover that comes stock. Why we didn’t get this OEM on the Tremor I have no idea.
@Robb1 Did you have any problems with the fitment of that model number? Trying to order it online and they're telling me they can't guarantee it fits the VIN. So double checking that first. The part they said fits is ML3Z7222D but I think that's just the fiberboard version we already have.

Had my truck at the dealer today for an alignment after installing a 2" AS kit - they say Im going to need a camber kit to align properly- thats another topic...
Anyway the Raptor skid should fit any F150 as its the same subframe as a Raptor
The dealer gave me a quote of $166.50 +tax for the Raptor skid / 4 bolts and 2 nuts
the oil cover plate was $64.32 +tax for the oil cover /3 bolts and 3 nuts
Several places online was going to charge $60 to $100 to ship to my location - so in this instance will be cheaper to order from the dealer.
I may just order the Skid plate and forgo the cover - if it bothers me I will order later.
I plan on installing the fomoto drain valve and then add the Skid390-178
ate, I cant see any reason to order the Talon skid for more money ($212 more for me) as it doesn't appear to add any additional benefit

The ML3Z-7222-D is the fiber board one. I know this without a doubt because I fell into that trap and ended up ordered ML3Z-7222-D the first time around. The P/Ns in my post are confirmed correct and it will fit.

Do not let them talk you into anything else.

It’s “prettier“ that’s about it, best I can tell.

Perfect, thanks. Ordered.

Just got an email from Tasca saying HL3Z-7222-C was replaced by HL3Z-7222-E. Any idea if there is any difference?

I tried to order from Tasca and they said it was out of stock. Going through https://www.onlinefordpartscatalog.com/ and they were charging the same for the part but less for shipping. They were the ones that asked if I was sure that was the right part number and suggested the fiberboard (they looked up the VIN)
